What happens when policy is built for a world that’s changed? Professor Douglas Deng sees this as a key challenge for the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Drafted 20 years ago, before next-generation products were part of the picture, many of its frameworks were benchmarked against combustible tobacco. On The Smokeless Word: Live from the Lab, Deng questions whether global policy has kept pace with the evolution of the market. Watch the full episode now. #TheSmokelessWord #Omni #BAT

"Different countries have different realities." A point that stayed with me from my conversation with economist Professor Douglas Deng on The Smokeless Word: Live from the Lab. From developed economies to those where tobacco farming supports livelihoods, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to tobacco harm reduction. But every country needs an evidence-based framework. As a scientist, that resonates. Evidence should set the direction; local realities shape how it's applied. Catch a first look below ⬇️ #TheSmokelessWord #Omni

“Do you regret not working in academia?” Dr James Murphy wasn't expecting this question from his guest on The Smokeless Word: Live from the Lab. But when Professor Douglas Deng turned the tables, Dr Murphy knew his answer – "no". Dr Murphy grew up around friends and family who smoked and he always wondered whether there was a better way. Tobacco harm reduction gave him the chance to apply his scientific background to a challenge that matters to him. As he put it during their conversation on The Smokeless Word: Live from the Lab, a lot of jobs give reward, but few give purpose. For Dr Murphy, this is one of them. Tune in to hear more. #TheSmokelessWord #Omni

Bans don't work. Smarter regulation does. A smokeless transition can't be built on an illegal market. Illegal pouches and vapes bypass safety standards and age limits - they leave consumers unprotected, fund criminal networks and undercut responsible businesses. This is more than lost taxes. Illegal products make it harder to tell responsible innovation from a free-for-all. Regulation must play its part. Poor rules can push people to illegal sellers, laws without enforcement protect no one. Expose illegal trade. Enforce the rules. Protect a smokeless future. #LetsGoSmokeless
