If you're finding it harder than ever to recruit skilled engineers or tradespeople, you're in good company. Skills shortages are one of the defining challenges for the sector right now, with demand climbing and experienced talent in short supply across Scotland. The businesses coming through it best are the ones that have stopped relying solely on the open market and started growing their own. That's exactly what an apprenticeship lets you do. Rather than competing for scarce, expensive hires, you bring someone in and develop the precise skills your business needs, trained to your standards and your way of working. You turn a shortage into a pipeline. It's a particularly strong move in engineering and construction, where the gap between the skills employers need and the people available is widest, and where growing your own talent gives you real resilience for the years ahead. Ayrshire College is here to make it straightforward. Our Business Engagement team helps you shape the right apprenticeship, delivers the training and qualification, and supports you and your apprentice all the way through. And it genuinely works for businesses of every size. If you're a smaller firm, taking on a single apprentice could be one of the best answers to your hiring headaches. Stop competing for scarce talent. Start building it. See how apprenticeships work for your business at ayrshire.ac.uk, or call the team on 01292 293552

Most growing engineering and construction firms reach the same point. There's more work coming in than the current team can comfortably handle. Taking on an apprentice is one of the smartest ways to grow into that demand. You bring in fresh talent, develop them around your own methods and standards, and build capability that scales as you do. Ayrshire College handles the training side and works with you to keep it manageable. This works for firms of every size. Whether you're an established employer or a small business taking on your very first apprentice, we'll help you get it right.
