I built syslog-ng in 1998. I'm proud of it. And I'm going to be honest with you about what that means in 2025. syslog-ng Premium Edition was a solid product for a long time. The mechanism behind Axoflow is different at the foundation. syslog-ng PE required manual configuration for every source. You needed to know what was sending, what format it used, and how to write the parser. That knowledge lived in the heads of two or three people on your team. When they left, it left with them. Axoflow automatically discovers and identifies data sources, applies expert-curated classification rules, and reduces data volume 50 to 80 percent before it reaches your SIEM. Not magic, just applied pattern matching at scale against a continuously maintained library. We maintain the library, you own the policy decisions. The graphical interface matters more than it sounds, not because visibility is a nice-to-have, but because it's how you catch problems before analysts do. When a source stops sending, when a new device appears, when a parser starts dropping events, you see it in real time. syslog-ng PE offered none of that. What changed is the architecture, the release cadence (monthly for Axoflow, none for PE), and the commitment to keeping it current. Both carry SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001. Does it make sense to keep maintaining a static config on a product with no active development, or is the switching cost smaller than it looks?

Running syslog-ng™ today means running in the dark. No visibility into what your pipeline is doing. No alert when a source stops sending. No way to know what's misconfigured or silently failing until your team discovers the gap in a postmortem. The creator of syslog-ng™ built Axoflow to fix exactly this. Deploy Axolet on your existing nodes and see everything flowing, dropping, or misconfigured across your entire fleet in 5 minutes. Then decide what's next.

syslog-ng™ has been running critical infrastructure for 27 years. It earned that trust. But if your team is still managing it today, you know the reality: CLI-only config, no fleet visibility, no way to know what's dropping until something breaks downstream. The creator of syslog-ng™ founded Axoflow. Same engineering foundations, built for how pipelines actually run now. Management console, automated classification, reduction, normalization across 262 log formats, and policy-based routing. Your syslog-ng™ layer doesn't need to be replaced. It needs what it never had.

syslog-ng™ PE hasn't had a release since November 2025. You already know this. You've been working around it for the past few years. The engineering team that built and maintained syslog-ng™ for over two decades is now at Axoflow. We didn't abandon the technology. We rebuilt it with the things it always needed: a console, automated parsing, and visibility into every node in your fleet. If you're still waiting for the next PE update, this is what you should look into instead.

As Anton Chuvakin said on the Cloud Security Podcast by Google, in capturing the shift: Pipelines aren't cost-cutting tech, they're data quality tech. He’s right. When normalization and enrichment happen early, it makes the whole stack more reliable. Not magically, but just because the data finally reflects reality. This is the part that most architectures still miss. You can distribute the storage all day, but if the events are wrong, your conclusions will be too. In the blog, I go in-depth into why fixing data before it lands anywhere is becoming the backbone of modern security design. If you value accuracy over aesthetics, the full write-up is worth a read.
