When we explain that a project cut manual handling to zero, people hear "jobs gone". However, it's almost always the opposite. On a recent line, operators spent two shifts a day sorting and orienting parts by hand. This type of repetitive work caps how much a plant could make and is often hard to hire for. So we built a system that feeds and orients the parts all on its own. Employees tip the components in and let it run. With that system, output doubled- a system designed to perform, powered by people. Future-Proof Automation for Manufacturing assesses the unique bottlenecks that are challenging for operations, and a solution is then designed to maximise efficiency and skill. This includes re-training existing operators to work with automation, continuing to develop efficiency. Without a balance between Advanced Automation and on-the-floor operation requirements, getting the most out of automation becomes yet another challenge.

There are many ways to automate, but having many pieces of automation to do multiple jobs might not be the best path forward. A few years ago, we worked with a partner to design a cell that sorts, picks and packs 6,000 different aluminium profiles. Different lengths, weights, shapes, or getting the packing wrong can mean costly freight, inefficiency and product that’s harder to keep track of. Instead of installing multiple cells to address each of the challenges in the line, the Applied Team built a program with advanced vision to scan each profile, tessellate and then pack in real time. Automating a variety of applications in one cell can have a bigger impact than automating many small things across lines. What's the messiest, highest variety job on your floor right now?
