DKA vs HHS: Know the Difference! Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) are life-threatening complications of diabetes mellitus that require prompt recognition and immediate intervention. In response to increasing concern around hyperglycemic crises, recent American Diabetes Association (ADA) standards (2025) were updated with specific diagnostic criteria and treatment protocols for these conditions. Diagnostic criteria include: DKA (all criteria must be met): o Blood glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL or history of diabetes o Positive urine and blood ketones o Metabolic acidosis (pH < 7.3 and/or serum bicarbonate < 18 mEq/L) HHS (all criteria must be met): o Blood glucose ≥ 600 mg/dL o Hyperosmolarity (total serum) > 320 mOsm/L o Trace or negative ketones in urine and blood o Metabolic alkalosis (pH ≥ 7.3 with serum bicarbonate ≥ 15 mEq/L) While both conditions involve severe hyperglycemia, the infographic below offers a clear visual comparison of the key similarities and differences between DKA and HHS, supporting timely recognition and guideline-based treatment decisions. #ApexInnovations #DiabetesCare #DiabetesEducation #Glycemia
