“No one has done this before” is a hypothesis, not a search result. You may know your technology and your competitors well. But prior art can come from unexpected places. The same technical principle might: - Be described using completely different terminology - Appear in another industry - Solve a different problem using a similar approach - Form one small part of a much larger invention That’s why a good patent search involves more than typing a description of the invention into a database. A search may support the inventor’s initial view or reveal a similar approach they hadn’t considered. Finding that approach early can help refine the invention and identify which features may be worth protecting. “I haven’t seen anyone do this before” is a useful starting point. A search helps us take the next step. The closer you look at existing solutions, the better you can understand your own contribution.

Invest-NL’s report “Enabling Biotechnology” examines a difficult stage for biotech startups: getting from a successful lab result to commercial production. That journey can take more than ten years. A process that performs well in a laboratory may behave differently in a large industrial reactor. Getting it to work reliably, at a commercially viable cost, requires extensive testing and expensive facilities. Companies need to fund that work while revenues are still uncertain. Investors want evidence that the process works at scale. Potential customers may wait for proof of production before signing a supply agreement. Meanwhile, those companies need funding and customers to move forward. The figure illustrates this biotechnology “valley of death.” The report points to a practical problem: the facilities and expertise are here, but they are not sufficiently connected. For startups, finding the right pilot facility, equipment supplier, or engineering partner can still involve navigating a fragmented network. Shared facilities give companies somewhere to test their processes under realistic conditions. Closer collaboration with engineering and automation specialists can help them identify problems earlier and use the results to improve the next production run. With the right facilities and partners available, startups can spend more time improving their processes and less time arranging the support they need.

Working on a deep tech breakthrough and looking for funding to take the next step? Turning promising research into a product can take years of development, testing, and investment. Finding funding that fits your stage of development is part of that process. The European Innovation Council (EIC) provides funding on a scale that can make a substantial difference. To give an indication: its 2026 programs offer grants of up to €4 million and equity investments of up to €30 million, depending on the funding program and your stage of development. On November 19, the EIC is hosting an online information day about its funding opportunities for 2027. The program covers four routes: 1. EIC Pathfinder: advanced research into breakthrough technologies. 2. EIC Transition: turning research results into innovation opportunities. 3. EIC Accelerator: developing and scaling breakthrough innovations. 4. EIC STEP Scale Up: scaling strategic technologies in Europe. If funding is holding back your next stage of development, put November 19 in your calendar. The sessions will help you understand which EIC opportunities to explore and how to prepare for 2027. See link in the comments for the program and registration.
