Updated guidance reinforces reporting deadlines and the need to handle prohibited payments correctly. U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) updated 11 frequently asked questions recently, covering blocked transactions, rejected payments, and reporting obligations. The update offers practical guidance for financial institutions handling payments that may violate U.S. sanctions. Key takeaways for compliance teams: Know when to block: Funds involving a blocked person’s interest in the property may need to be frozen under applicable sanctions rules. Know when to reject: Some prohibited transactions must be returned to the originator rather than blocked. Meet reporting deadlines: Reports on blocked property and rejected transactions generally must be submitted to OFAC within 10 business days. Keep clear records: Supporting documents and accurate reporting help demonstrate that sanctions procedures are being followed. A screening alert is only a part of sanctions compliance. Teams also need clear procedures for deciding what action to take, documenting the decision, and reporting it within the required timeframe. New examination priorities highlight AML compliance, AI risks, and customer data protection. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced its examination priorities for fiscal year 2027, identifying key areas where financial firms should expect closer regulatory attention. The priorities cover broker-dealer AML programmes, cybersecurity, new technology, investment advice, and risks linked to complex financial products. Key takeaways for compliance teams: Review AML controls: The SEC will focus on broker-dealer AML compliance, trading practices, and supervision. Protect customer data: Firms should strengthen cybersecurity and prepare for disruptions that could affect their services. Manage AI risks: Financial firms should understand how emerging technologies affect their operations and compliance controls. Keep compliance evidence ready: Policies, monitoring results, testing records, and corrective actions should be properly documented. Why this matters? The SEC’s priorities do not introduce new rules, but they signal where examiners plan to focus attention. Firms should use the announcement to review their existing controls and identify weaknesses before an examination. For AML teams, the message is simple: having compliance policies is not enough. Firms must show that their controls are rightly in place and working effectively. What happens when AI says “low risk” but your instincts say otherwise? Hashir Siddiqui and Urriolagoitia Miner unpack one of the biggest questions facing the future of AML: where should human judgment sit when AI enters the investigation? Their conversation explores why AML cannot be reduced to rules alone and why the strongest model may be humans working with machines, not machines working alone.
