In 2026, 51% of all aged care workers in Australia were born overseas, with around 39% speaking a language other than English at home - Hello Leaders Australia's aged care sector is beautifully diverse, and that diversity is one of its greatest strengths. It also means that for many in our workforce, caring for residents from English speaking backgrounds comes with its own unique set of cultural nuances, communication styles, expectations, family dynamics, and values that may differ from their own lived experience. That's exactly why we've developed our newest course, Caring for People of English Speaking Backgrounds. This course is designed to help aged care workers: ✔️ Identify the diverse needs and preferences of residents from English-speaking backgrounds. ✔️ Communicate effectively with residents, using clear, respectful, and appropriate language and non-verbal cues. ✔️ Recognise potential barriers to engagement, including social isolation, mental health challenges, or assumptions based on language familiarity. ✔️ Provide care that supports emotional wellbeing and social connection, promoting independence, dignity, and quality of life. ✔️ Reflect on personal biases and assumptions to ensure culturally safe, inclusive, and equitable care. ✔️ Collaborate with families and communities to support the resident’s preferences, traditions, and involvement in decision-making. Caring for People of English Speaking Backgrounds is now available in Altura Learning Home Care and Residential libraries globally. Paul Goudie and Penny Anguita are thrilled to be in London this week for the London Care Show to have conversations with the people we work with and to hear what’s working, what’s not, and where things need to go next. Having supported the UK care sector for over ten years, we know how important these conversations are. What we hear directly shapes how we improve our platforms and delivery, while staying focused on what we do best: creating clinical training that reflects real situations, environments, and decisions. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes, and these conversations are helping define what comes next. More to share soon, feel free to reach out.
