It's a pleasure to welcome Alex Merced from Dremio as an OSA Con 2026 speaker on November 2 in San Francisco. Alex will be introducing the "Open Agentic Lakehouse." https://lnkd.in/g-359vDS. It's in-person! Alex is the most eloquent speaker on data lake technologies I know. His talks offer an excellent overview of data lake architecture and the open source projects that make up the foundation. This year's presentation describes emerging open protocols to integrate AI agents with data lakes. It's must viewing for anyone building modern analytic systems. #opensource #agentic #lakehouse #apache #iceberg #ossie #polaris

OSA Con 2026 is coming up on November 2nd at the AWS Builder Loft in San Francisco. Matt Topol from Columnar will be doing a talk on Arrow Database Connectivity or ADBC for short. https://lnkd.in/gv2hqd8U If you work on data and don't yet know the Apache Arrow project, you absolutely need to attend this talk. Arrow is replacing 4 decades of incompatible, slow TCP/IP client protocols with a shared protocol for moving columnar data fast. The word "revolution" is pretty overused in tech but it's deserved here. #apache #arrow #opensource #analytics #databases #aws

Will AI end up destroying humanity? I don't know, and I doubt anyone else does either. What I do know for certain is AI will destroy valuable data along the way. Database applications have built-in gates to reduce the chance of accidental deletion. The big danger is database administration. At Altinity, Inc. we have seen multiple cases where customer AI agents with admin credentials erased production data. The people running the agents were employees, not attackers. As Pogo said, "we have met the enemy and he is us." Solving the problem is going to be hard. Database administration commonly involves manual procedures and custom scripts--lots of both, often with very high privileges. The working assumption is that very paranoid humans carry these out. That's no longer true when AI agents enter the house. The quick solution is simple: don't use agents for database administration. That includes using ChatGPT and Claude to generate procedures. Of course people will do so anyway, because it's convenient. The fallback is to test the living daylights out of anything you get from an AI agent. Make sure your backups are good, too. The longer solution? For that we need to understand how AI is changing database administration, then start to build in protections systematically. Some of the possibilities include new database security checks, AI watchdog agents, and baking human oversight into the loop. We'll figure it out and the result will be better administration of data. But it will take time. Losing production data is horrible. I did it on a grand scale in my first IT job thanks to a mistake in running backups. So I have some simple advice if you are adding agent-based administration on data you value. Follow the advice of the old Eagle song: "take it easy." And stay paranoid. Paranoia never goes out of style when you manage data. p.s., The image was generated by ChatGPT. It does a good job, but I don't let it anywhere near data. #opensource #databases #ai #chatgpt #claude #disasterrecovery #agentic

🔥 We built shared storage for #ClickHouse® MergeTree: Meet CAS! 🔥 Content-Addressed Storage (CAS), experimental in Antalya 26.6, adds shared object storage to the existing MergeTree model so storage can scale independently from compute, without replacing #MergeTree with a new engine. The interesting part is how it works: each MergeTree part file is stored by its content hash. If another part contains the same file, #CAS can reference the existing object instead of storing another copy. We break down the architecture, how CAS handles #deduplication, and where it fits today as the implementation continues to mature: https://hubs.la/Q04y7dDG0

Built-in separation of storage and compute is a key feature of every modern analytic database...Except for open source ClickHouse®. We are changing this today. I'm delighted to announce that Altinity, Inc. Antalya 26.6 builds now offer experimental Content-Addressable Storage (CAS) for MergeTree tables. With a simple configuration change, users can place MergeTree data on shared object storage. The door is open to even faster and more cost-efficient insight on large data sets. There's no lock-in: CAS is 100% open source. Our CTO Alexander Zaitsev has written a blog about the innovative design behind CAS and how to enable it yourself. https://lnkd.in/eaMUz3is. Altinity customers are already lining up to try it. CAS is still experimental. It passes our internal tests--which are extensive. What we need now is feedback on real world systems. We invite you to install Antalya and give us feedback. Our plan is to release a GA version of CAS by the end of 2026. It will join a host of Antalya features like OAuth/OIDC integration, swarm servers, plus high-performance export to and query from Iceberg data lakes. We're building the open source foundation for the fastest, most cost-efficient analytics on the planet. Help us get there. Try out CAS today! #opensource #realtime #analytics #antalya #clickhouse

Tired of single-product vendor conferences? They're boring! 6 years ago I came up with an alternative: OSA Con. https://osacon.io. It's anti-hype, practical, and intellectually diverse, with speakers on open source, AI, and analytics. And we invite you to join us on November 2nd for our first in-person conference at the AWS Loft in Downtown San Francisco. There will be 20 awesome talks from awesome engineers at Firebolt, Databricks, IBM, Gamebeast, Grafana Labs, Dremio, Salesforce, Loophole Labs and many others. We have two tracks across the entire day with plenty of time to network and have great hallway conversations. Did I mention that it's free? Can't make it to San Francisco? No problem! The conference is streamed as well. I'll be introducing our speakers over the next few days. Don't wait, though. Tickets are going fast. Sign up today! We'll see you at OSA Con! p.s., Huge thanks to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the space to run the conference. Y'all are awesome. #OSACon #opensource #ai #lakehouse #databases #cloud
