See you today at Berns for the Legal Intelligence Forum!

Will access to larger datasets - and the capital required to invest in technology - drive consolidation in the legal industry? I think it could and it's one of the questions I discussed recently with Fredrik Sjögren at Dagens Industri - the full interview is linked below. For decades, legal advice has been heavily dependent on the experience and memory of individual lawyers. The opportunity now is to make more of that expertise data-driven. Achieving this requires substantial and sustained investment - in data infrastructure, integrations, governance, evaluation, specialist talent and organisational change. This could create a powerful flywheel: • Capital enables firms to activate proprietary knowledge. • Better access to larger datasets can lead to better advice and client outcomes. • Better outcomes attract more clients and matters. • More matters generate more valuable knowledge and data. This may widen the gap between firms that have the resources to make their data useful and those that continue to depend primarily on individual experience - potentially accelerating consolidation, partnerships and shared technology platforms across the industry. The leading firms of the future will find ways to make the collective judgement and experience of the entire organisation available at the moment decisions are made. Europe is at risk of making the same mistake again. We have the talent. We have the universities. We have the researchers, entrepreneurs and companies capable of creating world-leading technology. The problem is turning technological leadership into economic scale. The numbers tell an uncomfortable story. In 2018, the EU economy was worth around $16 trillion, compared with around $21 trillion in the US. By 2024, the EU had grown to roughly $19.5 trillion. The US had reached almost $30 trillion. The gap had more than doubled. This matters because we are entering another defining economic moment - and one Europe cannot afford to miss. That moment is AI, which requires enormous investment in compute, energy and data centres. The decisions about where that infrastructure is built are being made today. Those decisions will shape where the next generation of companies can grow, where capital flows and where talent chooses to build. If Europe does not create the conditions to build that infrastructure here, we risk watching another generation of technological leadership - and the economic value it creates - scale elsewhere. Sweden is a useful reminder of what is possible. A country of just over 10 million people has produced companies that have changed industries around the world. And in Q2 this year, Sweden's GDP grew faster than the US and major European economies. So this is not an argument that Europe lacks talent or ambition. Quite the opposite. The question is whether we can create the conditions to turn that talent into companies, infrastructure and economic scale for the long term. Europe has the talent to lead. What we cannot afford is another decade of watching that leadership create economic value elsewhere. That's what I'll be discussing at Tech Open during Nordic Tech Week on 10 September with Sara Rywe, Mattias Miksche and Henrik Hedberg. Join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/egNpvhb6
