DID YOU KNOW? ... A fire truck now costs over $1 million more than it did in 2020? That’s a 73 per cent increase! And the cost of a garbage truck has doubled since 2020. All Albertans are facing pressure with inflation, including municipalities. Alberta’s local governments are increasingly under pressure to reduce their property taxes, but there are many things affecting municipal budgets. We have created the information project ‘Property Taxes Reimagined: Fair Funding for Strong Communities’ that will help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured and start a conversation with residents, businesses, and municipal and provincial leaders about whether Alberta needs to reimagine how local community services are funded. We will continue to add more information, local stories, and videos. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gqwbPKqV #ABmunis

It may seem that you only pay your property taxes to your municipal government. But some of your property taxes are levied by the province. While this is an efficient way for the provincial government to gain tax revenue, many municipal leaders think the system is unfair. You see, an increase in the provincial government's property taxes impacts the ability of municipal governments to raise more revenue to cover the increasing costs for municipal services. If the province increases its property tax rates every year, your municipal government will have to make hard decisions about how much they can increase their property tax rates. This means municipal governments might not be able to raise enough revenues to take care of things like roads, sidewalks, or buildings. This could lead to bigger problems and even higher municipal property taxes later on. We need to have a conversation about how Alberta's local community services are funded. ABmunis' ‘Property Taxes Reimagined: Fair Funding for Strong Communities’ has been created to help Albertans understand how property taxes are structured. We will continue to add more information, local stories, and videos. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gqwbPKqV #ABmunis

Alberta Municipalities applauds the great work of its members to make Alberta a province of thriving communities. Thanks to their dedication & commitment, our villages, towns, and cities are attracting tens of thousands of people from across Canada who are moving here to enjoy better lives. The proof is in the numbers. Global Citizen Solutions has ranked our largest cities as two of the three best places in Canada to live. And local leaders have worked very hard to speed the development of affordable housing. As a result, Edmonton & Calgary have succeeded in achieving the greatest expansion in affordable housing in Canada. ABmunis’ members are succeeding in getting the work done to build thriving and sustainable communities. #ABmunis
