Nancy LeaMond, AARP’s Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer, is calling on employers, policymakers, and leaders to help us build a future where talent is valued for skills and experience - not age. Age discrimination doesn’t just harm individuals, it weakens companies and drains our economy - it costs the U.S. $850 billion each year. The future of work is multigenerational, and organizations that recognize this will be the ones that thrive. #agediscrimination #economy #value #workplace #experiencedworkers #aarp

Age discrimination in the workplace isn’t always obvious. For workers 50 and older, it can show up in subtle yet hurtful ways, like being unfairly seen as less tech-savvy, labeled as resistant to change, or having years of accomplishments and wisdom overlooked. Jokes about age or generational differences may seem harmless, but they can leave experienced employees feeling excluded. When training and development opportunities are primarily directed at younger staff, it sends the message that growth is no longer intended for everyone. Subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) biases like these are widespread: 60% of workers 50-plus report encountering them. Recognizing and addressing these everyday forms of age bias is essential for creating workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow, contribute, and succeed together.

Conventional wisdom says older workers fall behind as tech evolves. The data says otherwise. A new AARP-LinkedIn report, led by Rebecca Perron, Matthew Baird, and Rosie Hood, PhD, shows workers 50+ are closing the tech skills gap, while bringing valuable soft skills – like leadership, communication, judgment and collaboration – that AI can’t replicate. The result? Stronger multigenerational teams, higher retention, and greater resilience for employers. “My job is to heal them, to make them feel safe, loved and then find them a good home, if we can.” After adopting a blind cat, Michele Hoffman founded Milo’s Sanctuary in 2004 to protect disabled cats from euthanasia. Today, it has grown into the oldest and largest special-needs cat rescue in the world. Michele has helped save more than 3,000 cats and has built a community of over 600,000 social media followers. Her work has not only transformed the lives of the cats she rescues, but also inspired countless others to volunteer and support animals in shelters. Watch her inspiring story.
