The VML Future Shopper 2026 report has landed with some interesting data where grocery retail is heading: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗭 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. VML’s Future Shopper 2026 is out and packed with great insights. It got me thinking about how grocery is so often the poster-child for the pressures faced in the retail sector, but this report has some glimmers of hope. - Shoppers want to feel good, not just pay less. 60% have cut spending – but coffee (36%) and beauty (33%) are untouchable. Theres real permission for retailers who offer genuine quality at low prices to celebrate the moments that make everyday life feel a little more fulfilling. - A no-nonsense model is exactly what the market wants. 26% of in-store time is pure mission mode and 49% say stores should be about buying, not experiences. Operational simplicity shouldn’t feel like a trade-off, and the best retailers will use simplicity of experience to differentiate. - Honest pricing is one of the most powerful brand assets available right now. 47% feel their favourite platforms are degrading and 55% say businesses prioritise profits over experience. Many loyalty schemes are eroding trust, while more transparent pricing stands out as a beacon of something more authentic. - Quality reassurance is the physical stores big advantage. 33% go in-store for sensory reassurance and 30% say it makes them more confident in their purchase. The in-store experience can do trust-building work that no digital channel can replicate. - Pricing should be built for the AI era. 45% want AI to find the best prices and grocery is the #1 AI-delegated category at 21%. A clear, consistent pricing model is exactly what AI recommendation engines reward – the opportunity is to get there first.
