We recently sat down with Karnan Thirupathy, Partner in our Singapore-based Marine, Trade and Commodities team, to discuss his practice, developments shaping the sector, and what he's most excited to achieve at WK. With more than 25 years’ experience advising clients across Asia, Karnan specialises in international arbitration and cross-border disputes spanning the marine, trade, commodities and insurance sectors. Alongside Special Counsel Charlene Sim and their team, he is helping strengthen WK’s capabilities across the region. In his Q&A, Karnan looks at the risks moving the market, challenges facing insurers, traders and maritime businesses, and his vision for success across APAC. He also reflects on his career journey and shares a little about himself beyond the law. Read here: https://lnkd.in/giE_ruKq

This National Carers Week, we're recognising the millions of Australians who provide care and support to a family member or friend. Caring can take many forms – from supporting children, parents and partners to caring for loved ones living with disability, illness or age-related challenges. Often, these contributions happen quietly and may not always be visible. This year's theme, ‘Care for a Carer: Making Carers Visible’, is a reminder of the importance of recognising carers and ensuring they feel seen, valued and supported. Having been recently accredited Family Friendly Workplaces, we're committed to building on the support already in place for carers, parents and families, and fostering an environment where people can thrive both at work and at home. To all carers, thank you for the contribution you make every day. Odile Shepherd, Louise Shannon, Scott Macoun, Angela Tan, Lisa F..

Recent amendments to the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Cargo Agency and Intermediary Agreements could reshape the risk landscape for freight forwarders and cargo agents using Direct Air Waybills (DAWBs). From 1 July 2026, intermediaries may effectively assume shipper-level indemnities and obligations unless otherwise agreed with the carrier, creating additional contractual and liability considerations. In this article, James Cooper and Marcus Lee examine the amendments, how they interact with existing IATA frameworks such as Resolution 809zz, and the practical steps freight forwarders and cargo agents should consider to manage risk. Earlier this week, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) released new guidance to support compliance with the automated decision-making (ADM) transparency obligations introduced by the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024 (Cth). The guidance provides practical insight into how APP entities should approach compliance with the new requirements – including worked examples of the disclosures expected in privacy policies and clarification of key concepts that determine whether an activity falls within scope. Importantly, the obligation extends beyond artificial intelligence and may capture a broad range of technologies and business processes, including bespoke software, algorithms and, in some circumstances, spreadsheets and chatbot usage. Our team has prepared an overview of the OAIC's guidance, key takeaways and practical next steps for organisations preparing for compliance with the new transparency obligations.
