Rebound from Golden Week powers global traffic and capacity growth Although traffic from all other regions declined in the third week of October, the rebound of exports from key Asian economies as their factories restarted after the ‘Golden Week’ mid-autumn festival break produced a +2% expansion in global chargeable weight flown compared to the previous week (WoW). Overall pricing (in USD) rose +4% on increases out of all but one origin regions, while capacity expanded +2% on the strength of freighter deployment, rebounding from two weeks of reductions. Resurgent exports in week 42 (12 to 18 October) from Asia Pacific produced a +9% jump over the previous week’s chargeable weight from the region, in sharp contrast with the WoW decline in volumes elsewhere. The retreat was most pronounced out of North America (-5%), which can be partly attributed to national holidays in Canada (Thanksgiving) and USA (Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day). Chargeable weight shrank -4% from Central and South America (CSA) also partly explained by 12 October national holiday celebrations, -3% out of the Middle East and South Asia (MESA) region, -2% out of Europe and -1% from Africa. Rates hold steady as demand dips due to early-October holidays Average worldwide air cargo rates have held steady in the first two weeks of October despite volumes edging downwards for a third consecutive week in week 41 (5 to 11 October), with the decline due mainly to China’s annual ‘Golden Week’ mid-autumn festival holiday and to a lesser extent to national holidays in Taiwan and South Korea. Still, global tonnage was at +9% year-on-year (YoY) in week 41, continuing the strong YoY trend into October after September closed at the same growth figure. According to the latest weekly figures from WorldACD Market Data, average global spot rates were flat at US$3.55 per kilo in week 41, with full-market rates (combining spot and contract rates) also stable at $3.13 per kilo. Spot rates from Asia Pacific origins dropped by -3%, week on week (WoW), to $4.83 per kilo, as tonnages from the region recorded a third small (-1%) WoW decline. Spot rates also dipped from Middle East & South Asia (-2%, WoW) origins amid further disruptions in the Middle East, but a +10% WoW rise in spot rates from Africa offset the declines from other markets. Asia and North America drive +9% YoY tonnage growth in September Worldwide air cargo tonnages bounced back strongly in September following their August lull, with volumes rising +3% compared with the previous month and growing +9%, year on year (YoY), according to the latest figures from WorldACD Market Data. September’s strong performance was reflected across all the world’s main air cargo origin regions, including +10% YoY growth from Asia Pacific and North America origins, +9% from Middle East & South Asia (MESA), +8% YoY growth from Europe and Africa origins, and +5% YoY increase from Central & South America (CSA). It builds upon growth last year September of +4%, YoY, and comes despite the slump since 1 July in e-commerce volumes to Europe – especially from Hong Kong and southern China – following the removal of EU ‘de minimis’ exemptions on lower-value imports. It points to a robust and resilient air cargo market responding to various international geopolitical and economic changes, particularly strong demand from the high-tech sector, and air cargo’s crucial role as a delivery vehicle for high-value and time-sensitive products, and for navigating supply chain disruptions and imbalances. Pricing and capacity hold steady as traffic slows Global airfreight tonnage and pricing diverged, as chargeable weight declined -4% from the prior week, sinking in all but one sector, whereas pricing rose across the board except from North America, where it was unchanged from the previous week. Tonnages shrank week on week (WoW) out of Asia Pacific and Middle East and South Asia (MESA) both to USA and Europe, but declines were more pronounced to Europe. According to the latest weekly figures from WorldACD Market Data, Africa (+7%) was the only origin region that posted a WoW increase in chargeable weight, with all other areas showing contraction, ranging from -7% out of Asia Pacific to -1% both out of Europe and Central and South America (CSA). The decline out of Asia Pacific can be partly attributed to national holidays in Japan (Autumnal Equinox Day on 23 September) and China (Mid-Autumn Festival on 25 September). Comparing the past two weeks with the prior fortnight (2Wo2W), both Asia Pacific and MESA saw contractions in all major outbound sectors (except expansion from Asia Pacific to North America), whereas flows out of Europe and North America increased in all sectors. Tonnages rebound ahead of Chinese holiday period Worldwide air cargo tonnages have rebounded in mid-September following their usual annual dip caused by Labor Day in the US and Canada on 7 September, with chargeable weight rising for the fourth consecutive week, and tonnages, rates, and capacity all up compared with this time last year, from all major regions. According to the latest weekly figures from WorldACD Market Data, global tonnages rose, week on week (WoW), by +2% in week 38 (14 to 20 September), mainly driven by a +14% rebound in volumes from North America origins, taking North America traffic back up to its level in the previous few weeks. But there were declines from Middle East & South Asia (MESA) of -4%, WoW, and from Africa also recording a -4% WoW decline. Asia Pacific spot rates and tonnages strengthen further Air cargo tonnages, spot rates and capacity from Asia Pacific all rose in the second week of September, although the strong performance was partly a rebound from national holidays the previous week in Vietnam and Malaysia, within an otherwise mixed but relatively stable period for air cargo. According to the latest weekly figures from WorldACD Market Data, chargeable weight from Asia Pacific origins rose by +4%, week on week (WoW), in week 37 (7 to 13 September), with spot rates increasing by a further +3%, their third consecutive WoW rise, to an average of US$4.69 per kilo.
