🔬 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 – 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗽 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱. We run world‑class clinical trials, yet most treatments tested here are discovered overseas. While Australian scientists generate brilliant discoveries, too few are translated into medicines, companies and industries at home. But it’s in that gap that WEHI’s Professor Guillaume Lessene sees our greatest opportunity – a chance to design a future-ready biotech ecosystem from the ground up, rather than retrofitting the past. Right now, less than 5% of cancer drugs entering Australian clinical trials originate from local discovery pipelines. With the right capabilities, technologies and sustained, mission-scale investment, that figure could be far higher – delivering better medicines, high‑value jobs and stronger sovereign capability. Significant national investments like the National Drug Discovery Centre and MedChem Australia have already laid critical foundations – initiatives made possible through support from the Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, via the Medical Research Future Fund. By deploying technologies such as AI, machine learning and spatial omics – and preparing now for future quantum capabilities – we can start to rethink drug discovery from first principles. For Prof Lessene, Associate Director of Therapeutic Discovery at WEHI, it’s a rare chance to leapfrog traditional biopharmaceutical models rather than follow the slow, incremental paths taken elsewhere. “Drug discovery today is a marathon that takes years and costs billions. “Combining a bold vision with AI, ML and future quantum computing tools, it could be a sprint – faster, smarter and delivering life-changing medicines and diagnostics sooner." The ultimate goal? Flip the equation – from dependency to resilience. From 5% to 50% locally-discovered clinical trial candidates. As debate turns toward bold, mission‑driven reform of Australia’s R&D system, and a 10-year vision for health and medical research, the opportunity is clear: ambitious national goals and sustained investment in translation could accelerate innovation, lift productivity and keep more value onshore.
