99% accuracy sounds impressive. Until you have 10,000 analytics questions a day. That's 100 wrong answers. Every day. And some of those answers will inform hiring plans, budgets, or which customers get attention. In recent conversations with people across the data space, I've noticed how often "context layer" and "semantic layer" are used interchangeably. The distinction matters when people make decisions based on the numbers. Context files can tell an AI what revenue means: which orders count, how refunds are treated, which date to use. But if the model still writes the calculation, it still has room to get that logic wrong. A missed filter. A wrong join. A subtly different definition. The query runs. The number looks plausible. The user moves on. An executable semantic layer makes the approved metric definition part of the calculation itself. The AI identifies the business concepts being requested; the layer compiles the query using those definitions. Context describes the rules. A semantic layer enforces them. Better models can reduce mistakes. But as adoption grows, even a small remaining error rate can expose many people to wrong numbers. That's why I believe metric calculations need to be deterministic. We should remove the model's freedom to reinvent business logic every time someone asks a question. The AI still needs to understand the question correctly. But once "revenue" is selected, its calculation should already be settled. 👇 I put together this animation to explain the difference.
