This month, for our Insight Exchange, we continue our three-part series exploring professionalism in residency and graduate medical education. In Part 2, we ask: What challenges professionalism? Drawing on conversations with six physician leaders, the article examines how stress, fatigue, competing demands, and workplace signals can test professionalism and how leaders can pair accountability with support for reflection and growth. Key themes include: ➜ Professionalism Is Often Tested Under Pressure: Stress, fatigue, and competing demands can strain even capable and committed residents’ ability to respond effectively. ➜ When Good People Have Hard Days: Distinguishing an isolated lapse from a pattern helps leaders address the behavior while considering the pressures surrounding it. ➜ When Intention and Perception Collide: Professional growth requires attention not only to what was intended, but also to how an interaction was experienced. ➜ How Workplace Signals Shape Behavior: What organizations reward, tolerate, and model influence what residents come to view as acceptable. ➜ Accountability Is Strongest When It Leads to Growth: Feedback that encourages reflection on impact can move the focus from avoiding consequences toward meaningful learning and change. ➡️ Read the full article, https://lnkd.in/e6siY7sC ➡️ Click here to sign for our monthly Insight Exchange e-newsletter, https://lnkd.in/eCeWK8ny #InsightExchange #ProfessionalismInHealthcare #HealthcareLeadership #CPPA #SafetyCulture
