Since 1998, Uniting’s therapeutic restoration program Newpin has been working with families whose children are in the child protection system. Our combination of practice values, using a centre based, peer led approach is what makes the Newpin model effective As part of the program, families attend a Newpin centre and engage in a group-based model for up to 18 months. During this time the program focuses on supporting wellbeing, strengthening parenting capacity and attachment, and developing safe, positive family relationships. Each centre is supported by a dedicated and compassionate team of Play Workers, Facilitators, Family Workers, and Support Workers. Together, this team walks alongside families on their restoration journey, offering support, structure, and encouragement every step of the way. ➡️ This is a referral-only program. If you're a caseworker with NSW Department of Communities and Justice or with an NGO Permanency Support Program, learn more about the success of Newpin and how to refer families online. ➡️ If you're a parent looking to have your children restored, contact your DCJ or Permanency Support Program caseworker and talk to them about taking part in the Newpin program. http://uniting.org/newpin

For families like Valery’s working to have their children restored to their care, what does the Newpin journey look like? Uniting Newpin is a free centre-based, therapeutic restoration program designed to help parents build their parenting skills, heal from trauma and support their children’s family connections, development and wellbeing. It’s about returning children home safely and with the right support. Once the referral to Newpin is made by the child’s caseworker (DCJ or out of home care non-government agencies), and accepted by the program, the family will start weekly play sessions and parenting and therapeutic groups. Once the program has been completed and restoration home approved, Newpin will walk alongside the family to make sure the transition home is safe, supportive and positive. To be eligible for Newpin, a caseworker must make the referral. If you require more information on the program, we’re here to help. Check out our new updated web pages that make it easier to refer online: http://uniting.org/newpin NSW Department of Communities and Justice, Andrew Montague, Anita Le Lay, Kim Janssen

Symone and Les became respite foster carers a couple of years ago. They had a lot of love to give and lots of space in their home. They helped with care for a lot of young people, but then began caring for one child more regularly, initially on weekends and then every Tuesday. After much discussion with each other and their Uniting support team, Symone and Les decided to see if he might want to stay with them on a more long-term basis. It’s been a year now and their foster son has made a remarkable change, increasing his attendance at school, taking part in extra curricular activities, and participating in sports and music at home. This Foster and Kinship Care Week, we celebrate foster carers like Symone and Les who have opened up their home and their hearts to young people who need it.
