Every high-performing sports team has a coach. Not because athletes don’t know how to play. But because knowing and doing are not the same. A coach provides the mirror athletes can’t hold up for themselves. They see blind spots, highlight overused strengths, and reveal the gap between intention and impact. Without that perspective, even the most talented players risk repeating old patterns. A coach also creates the container. Under relentless pressure, players default to survival habits: grabbing for control, protecting ego, or shrinking under stress. The coach steadies the team, anchors them to clarity, and holds them accountable to their values and their goal. And perhaps most importantly, a coach builds capacity. Not just new skills (horizontal development), but new ways of seeing, choosing, and responding (vertical development). They help athletes move from reactivity to intentionality, from self-preservation to team elevation. The result isn’t just winning games. It’s sustained performance, resilience under pressure, and a culture that keeps producing excellence. So here’s the question: If every elite athlete has a coach, why do so many leaders still believe they can perform at the highest level without one?

I used to think leaders resisted growth because they lacked skills. But the more I coached, the more I realised something deeper was in the way. Fear. The fear of being found out. In this episode of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔, I sit down with Michaela Wortley from EY to talk about the hardest and most powerful part of leadership growth: vulnerability. We talk about what happens when leaders stop pretending they have all the answers… And start doing the uncomfortable inner work instead. It’s not easy. But it’s real. And it changes everything. 🎧 Tune in now. I used to think my obsession with excellence was a strength until a mentor asked me to crumple up a drawing I was proud of. That moment cracked something open. It wasn't the excellence I was chasing. It was love. Approval. Safety. 🎙️ In this first episode of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 podcast, I share what happened when I stopped hiding behind achievement and started showing up with honesty. No image, no mask. Just me. It was terrifying. It was liberating. And it changed everything.
