As climate impacts intensify across Aotearoa New Zealand, adaptation is no longer optional. But how we adapt, who pays, and what we prioritise are questions that spark deep debate. Join us for a thought-provoking webinar featuring insights from Jonathan Boston, James Hughes, Katherine Cowper-Heays, and Simon Harvey. They’ll unpack key issues raised at our recent CCBC workshop, including: ✅ The evolution of climate adaptation policy in Aotearoa ✅ Real-world examples from current adaptation projects ✅ Interactive discussion on critical questions like: ▪️ Who should bear the cost of adaptation? ▪️ What’s a fair transition period for new frameworks? ▪️ How much public support is appropriate for planned relocations – both residential and business? Expect a rich conversation that explores the social, technical, cultural, economic, fiscal, and political dimensions of climate adaptation. South Dunedin is one of New Zealand’s most vulnerable urban areas, facing growing challenges from flooding and rising groundwater due to climate change. The South Dunedin Future programme, led by Dunedin City Council and Otago Regional Council, is working alongside mana whenua, local communities and partners to plan long-term adaptation for a resilient future. This video showcases the collaborative effort driving the programme, including the contributions of the Kia Rōpine consultant team: Tonkin + Taylor, WSP in New Zealand, Beca and G &T Connect. Together, we’re building a shared understanding of the risks and the case for change to help guide South Dunedin’s future. Resource management reform has moved from the horizon to the implementation phase. After 35 years, the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) has been replaced. The Planning Act and Natural Environment Act now provide the framework for a new resource management system in Aotearoa New Zealand. We now enter a phase of transition, and the decisions made during this period could shape infrastructure, development and investment for decades. For infrastructure owners and developers, this is the time to understand what's changing and where there's an opportunity to influence the plans, national direction and settings that will guide future projects. At Tonkin + Taylor, we’ve been involved in the reform since it began — advising clients and preparing submissions as the new system has taken shape. Our latest thought leadership explores what the reforms mean in practice, where organisations should focus during the transition, and how early action can help reduce consenting risk and protect future investment. A successful energy transition is about people, not just megawatts, market structures or new technology. Who benefits, who has a voice in decisions, and how can we build energy systems that are more affordable, resilient and accessible for communities across Aotearoa? Distributed energy solutions such as local solar, battery storage and microgrids are already creating opportunities for communities to build greater energy independence. But the best outcomes come when infrastructure is designed with communities, not simply for them. In our latest thought leadership article, Kirsti Murahidy explores why co-design, equity and kaitiakitanga need to be treated as essential parts of the energy transition rather than optional extras. Read the full article to learn how we can build a future energy system that supports communities, strengthens resilience and delivers value for generations to come: https://lnkd.in/eGVDxaWp
