Did you know that, for some people, type 2 diabetes can be reversed? In Singapore, more and more people are living with type 2 diabetes. It affects everyday life, family routines, and our healthcare system. Medication is important, but on its own, it is often not enough for long-term control. That is why Associate Professor Wern Ee Tang, Family Physician & Senior Consultant and Director of the Clinical Research Unit at NHG Polyclinics, NHG Health, is leading the NHG Diabetes Reversal Programme. This programme looks at how structured lifestyle changes – what we eat, how active we are, and the support we get to stay on track – can help people not only manage diabetes, but in some cases, achieve remission. Early results are promising and show that patient-centred, lifestyle-based care can make a real difference. By bringing clinical research into everyday primary care, A/Prof Tang and her team are helping to reshape how diabetes can be prevented, managed, and sometimes reversed. Through the Tanoto Foundation research grant, we are proud to support this work, deepening understanding, enabling earlier intervention, and giving communities more tools to make healthier choices. Watch the video to learn more about the study and what diabetes reversal could mean for patients and families in Singapore. #TanotoFoundation #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesReversal #CommunityHealth

Diabetes does not just impact the elderly or those who are overweight. Many young people are also at risk, but don’t show the usual warning signs. Professor Daph Gardner, Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital and Principal Investigator of the DIabetes in Asians at Risk in Youth (DIARY) study, is leading important research into why more young adults are developing Type 2 diabetes. Through the DIARY study, Professor Gardner and her team are uncovering new ways to detect diabetes risk earlier, including continuous glucose monitoring, body fat distribution, and behavioural and lifestyle factors. These findings could reshape how diabetes risk is assessed in young adults across Singapore. This research matters. Earlier and more accurate detection can prevent complications, guide timely intervention, and support healthier outcomes for the next generation. At Tanoto Foundation, we are proud to support researchers like Professor Gardner who are advancing the science behind early diabetes detection and prevention. Watch the video to learn more about the study. Together, we can accelerate medical research that leads to better health outcomes. #TanotoFoundation #DiabetesResearch #WorldDiabetesDay #YouthHealth

This World Diabetes Day, we join partners, families, and communities in highlighting the importance of preventing managing and even reversing diabetes. With one in three Singaporeans at risk of developing diabetes in their lifetime, early action and healthier daily habits play a vital role in improving long-term wellbeing. Evidence shows that sustained lifestyle changes, including healthier eating and gradual weight management, can significantly improve outcomes and even support diabetes remission. Tanoto Foundation partnered with NHG Health on the NHG Diabetes Reversal Programme, which supports individuals in improving their metabolic health through sustainable behavioural change, without relying on medication or surgery. This joint initiative also strengthens diabetes research in primary care and the community. As part of this collaboration, we are pleased to support a diabetes-friendly cookbook featuring simple, nutritious recipes that help individuals and families make healthier choices every day. Together, we can rewrite the story of every child’s future. In Indonesia, 57% of children aged 0-3 face barriers to reaching their full potential, with only one-third enrolled in early childhood education. This gap demands urgent, collective action to ensure every child thrives. At the SEAMEO CECCEP Annual Regional Forum, Tanoto Foundation was honoured to contribute to vital discussions on bridging this gap. In the session on “Foundational Parenting and Child Development,” we highlighted the power of empowering parents as the first educators. Our evidence-based programme, Rumah Anak SIGAP, equips parents and communities with tools to foster early childhood development, building strong foundations for lifelong learning. Our Indonesia Country Head, Inge Sanitasia Kusuma, articulated this point clearly: “Parents are the bridge between a child’s first steps and their limitless potential, but they need support to build it.” It was a privilege for us to share insights alongside esteemed panellists from Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and SEAMEO VOCTECH Regional Centre (Brunei Darussalam). Transforming early childhood outcomes requires a united ecosystem: governments, private sector, NGOs, and communities working hand in hand. At Tanoto Foundation, we’re committed to this collaboration, ensuring every child’s story begins with opportunity and hope. #TanotoFoundation #SEAMEOCECCEP #ECED #EarlyChildhood #Parenting #HumanCapital

For many parents, managing screen time is rarely as simple as setting a rule. At the end of a long, tiring day, handing a child a phone often comes down to practical everyday life. It is about getting dinner ready, finishing chores, or just needing ten minutes of quiet to catch your breath. In the latest Unlocking Potential podcast, our Head of Policy and Advocacy Eddy Henry sat down with Arifah Fauzi, Indonesia’s Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, to talk about these real pressures. Her message was reassuring. Positive parenting in a digital world does not mean finding hours of extra time, and it certainly does not mean being a perfect parent. Often, it just comes down to small, quiet moments together (#BersamaYangBermakna): • Spending at least 15 minutes quality time without gadgets, simply listening to what a child is feeling, without the pressure to lecture or solve everything. • Sharing the load at home, so fathers are actively part of the everyday routine and emotional care. • Sharing an easy bedtime story, like the ones we encourage through our #TemanCerita initiative, to help unwind and build trust together. None of us have all the answers when it comes to technology and parenting. But as Minister Arifah shared, guiding our children is not about shutting out the world. It is simply about making sure home is a warm place where they always feel heard. Advancing medicine requires more than scientific discovery. It also requires investing in the people who can translate research into better outcomes for patients. We are pleased to congratulate Professor Xunrong Luo on her appointment as the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 at Tsinghua University. A world-renowned physician-scientist, Professor Luo has dedicated her career to transplantation immunology and clinical translational medicine. Her research explores how the immune system responds to transplanted organs, with the aim of developing new approaches to reduce transplant rejection, improve long-term outcomes and address the critical shortage of donor organs. Through the Tanoto Endowed Professor of Medical Sciences programme, Tanoto Foundation and Tsinghua University are strengthening their longstanding partnership to support outstanding medical researchers, nurture the next generation of physicians and scientists, and bring research and clinical practice closer together. As Professor Luo takes on this new role, we look forward to seeing how her research, mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration contribute to medical innovation and, ultimately, better health outcomes for patients. #TanotoFoundation #TsinghuaUniversity #MedicalResearch #HealthcareInnovation
