🚛 Can Truck Loading Be Automated? Sumitomo Corporation Meets Next-Generation Robot AI for Logistics Revolution Sumitomo Corporation and the American unicorn company Dexterity, Inc. established the Dexterity-SC Japan joint venture. The company’s primary goal is to solve Japan’s logistics challenges through the practical application of Dexterity’s next-generation robot AI. The CEO Shotaro Oyama and COO Kosuke Ichikawa of Dexterity-SC Japan discuss how their Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) venture is tackling one of logistics’ toughest tasks: automating cargo loading. 🤖 Strengths of robot system with AI: ・It automates the loading of packages onto trucks and enables the directly loading various sizes of packages into a single container, which is a world-first achievement. ・It is capable of stacking packages coming in high speed like Tetris without collapsing, even in confined spaces of the container. It makes “Human-like Movement” a reality. 🤖 Proof-of-concept trials: Dexterity-SC Japan is conducting proof-of-concept trials with Sagawa Express to adapt the technology to Japan’s packaging formats and logistics workflows. 🤖 Great potential of robot AI: Robot AI could contribute to labor-saving and automation in other industries, such as solving problems on construction sites where robots cannot be fixed in place, or in transportation environments like railways, ships and airplanes. ✈️𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 It may come as a surprise, but about half of the world’s aircraft are operated under lease. Sumitomo Corporation's aviation business began with trading activities in the 1980s, and then evolved to focus on leasing in the 1990s and beyond, as the market shifted from "owning to using" aircraft. Sumitomo Corporation established SMBC Aviation Capital (SMBC AC) in a joint venture with SMBC (Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation) and Sumitomo Mitsui Finance & Leasing (SMFL). Today, SMBC AC is the world’s second-largest aircraft leasing company, managing a fleet of approximately 700 aircraft. In September 2025, Sumitomo Corporation announced its plan to acquire all shares of U.S.-based aircraft leasing company Air Lease Corporation for approximately US$7.4 billion. Upon completion of the acquisition, Sumitomo Corporation Group’s aircraft leasing business will rank among the world’s largest by number of aircraft owned and managed. 🔍1:Discerning Quality and Foresight While many companies adopted a cautious stance during the COVID-19 pandemic, we made the bold decision to acquire aircraft in anticipation of a demand rebound. This forecast was a key driver of the rapid growth our leasing business experienced in the post-COVID era. 🔍2:On-the-ground Responsiveness Leveraging years of industry experience, we strategically distribute its fleet across regions to mitigate geopolitical risks and maintain global operational stability. This local agility and global coordination are vital to its success. 🔍3:Business Development Capability Going beyond aircraft themselves, we partnered with MTU Aero Engines, one of the world’s largest engine maintenance providers, to establish SMBC Aero Engine Lease, which supplies spare engines during maintenance. Today, it is the world’s fifth-largest engine leasing company (excluding manufacturer-affiliated lessors), managing about 100 engines. We have also expanded into helicopter leasing through SMFL, responding to growing demand for services such as doctor helicopters. Today, it is the world’s second-largest helicopter leasing company, managing about 150 helicopters. The aviation business doesn’t stop at leasing. From supplying SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) to launching aftermarket businesses in collaboration with Werner Aero that reuse aircraft parts, we aim for a circular economy that spans the entire aircraft life cycle. Our mission is to contribute to the advancement and sustainability of global transportation infrastructure. 👍If you support our sustainable aviation mission, please like or share this post.
