Risk is an inherent factor in underground infrastructure. Ground conditions change, data is incomplete, and not every variable can be predicted before construction begins. Success is not defined by eliminating risk, but by how it is understood, managed and designed for. From early investigation through to delivery, risk shapes decisions around safety, constructability and long‑term performance. In this Insights piece, our geotechnical specialists explore how proactive planning and integrated tunnel design enables more resilient outcomes across transport, energy and water projects, enabling better decisions in the face of uncertainty underground.

Material behaviour is fundamental to tunnel safety, durability and long‑term performance, especially under extreme conditions. This Insights article examines how advanced materials, improved testing methods and refined application techniques are strengthening underground infrastructure. From fire resistance to structural resilience, understanding how materials perform is critical to managing risk and protecting assets. It’s where research, expertise and real‑world delivery come together.

Even with the best tools and models, underground conditions are never fully known until construction is underway. Our latest Insights article explores how SMEC's geotechnical and tunnel experts apply observational design, engineering judgement and adaptive thinking to manage uncertainty as projects evolve. By integrating geotechnical insight with practical delivery experience, we help clients reduce surprises, manage risk and protect project value. The result is safer construction, better outcomes and infrastructure that performs as intended over its full life.

What makes renewable energy reliable? Renewable energy is transforming how power is generated. Delivering reliable energy systems, however, requires more than generation alone. Storage, transmission and integrated infrastructure are critical to long-term performance and energy security. Renewables are just the start. See what comes next.

SMEC’s work in Papua New Guinea has taken shape through projects that combine technical expertise with local knowledge and long-term collaboration. One such example is the Finschhafen Integrated Special Economic Zone (FISEZ) in Morobe Province, an initiative aimed at unlocking investment, creating jobs and positioning the region as a hub for sustainable industrial growth. Working alongside the Finschhafen District Development Authority (FDDA), SMEC supported the development of the FISEZ Masterplan, integrating land use, infrastructure, energy transition and sustainability considerations to create a roadmap for future investment and development. From renewable energy hubs to port and industrial infrastructure, the project reflects a shared commitment to building resilient, future-ready communities, grounded in Papua New Guinea’s unique strengths and opportunities. We look forward to sharing more stories as we mark our 50-year milestone and continued partnership in Papua New Guinea.
