Schlam Payload builds mining truck bodies for just-in-time delivery. When they scaled 40% bigger, their digital tools couldn't keep up—unanswered questions and slow manual follow-up were draining production hours. Smart Shop Floor's automated scheduling gives them real-time visibility across the operation. Now they track material usage and job progress in real time, respond immediately to system alerts, and have seen lead times improve. Big thanks to Andrew Turner, John Herzfeld, Dhanush Krishna and Schlam Payload team for trusting us to build this together. https://lnkd.in/gE9AU4qB

Why 67% of scheduling systems can't handle reality. The issue: Systems that can't adapt to disruptions Here's what happens: the system creates a schedule, then a machine breaks down or material doesn't arrive on time. The schedule can't adapt—it may not even know something's wrong. It's like a GPS stuck on the same route even though the road is closed and you're 30 minutes down a detour. Your floor supervisor manually shuffles jobs while the system shows everything running perfectly. This “insufficiency for the real world” usually comes down to scheduling approach. Infinite capacity scheduling assumes unlimited machines, people, and time. It works well for high-volume repetitive production with predictable inputs. But job shop scheduling—multiple jobs with different routings, setup times, skill requirements, and material constraints—gets exponentially more complex with every variable. If your system isn't built to handle these constraints, one disruption requires manual intervention. Finite capacity scheduling is designed for this complexity. It models your actual constraints and adjusts in real-time when conditions change. The schedule stays relevant because it reflects what's actually happening on your floor. Not all scheduling systems are created equal. Selecting the right approach can be the difference between success and failure.
