Föhren is one of the ten best BESS projects in Europe 2026! We’re proud to see this pioneering battery storage project recognized in the category Best Overall European Energy Storage Project at the Energy Storage Awards 2026. With 21 MW and 55 MWh, the BESS is among the first systems in continental Europe’s distribution grid to operate with grid-forming inverters and to be directly connected to a substation. But Föhren goes far beyond storing energy: By supporting frequency and voltage stability, synthetic inertia and black-start capability, the project demonstrates how battery storage can provide essential grid services under real-world conditions, contributing to a reliable and renewable energy system. For many utility-scale projects, solar generation alone is no longer enough. Projects increasingly need to store energy, respond to grid requirements and support grid stability. That is why hybrid solutions are becoming an important part of modern power systems. Our new Stability Enhanced DC Coupled Hybrid Solution combines PV, battery storage and advanced grid-support capabilities to increase flexibility, support power system stability and make better use of renewable energy assets. During the opening of our new Gigawatt Factory in Niestetal, Germany, visitors got a first look at the solution as part of the customer tour. The factory itself marks an important milestone. More importantly, it provides the scale needed to deliver integrated PV and storage solutions for utility-scale projects around the world. Because the challenge is no longer simply adding more renewable generation. The focus is on operating increasingly complex power systems reliably, efficiently and economically.

The next generation of energy infrastructure must be built for a new generation of threats. As the world becomes increasingly electrified, energy infrastructure is evolving into one of society's most critical assets. Reliable power is no longer just about keeping the lights on. It is the foundation for economic stability, industrial competitiveness, public services and national security. At the same time, the threat landscape is changing rapidly. Cyber attacks can originate from anywhere and target everything from individual devices to entire energy systems. Whether driven by criminal organizations or state actors, these threats require a new way of thinking about how critical infrastructure is designed, built and operated. In our GIGAWATT Factory, retired U.S. Army General Ben Hodges and Florian Bechtold, EVP Large Scale at SMA, discuss why cyber security can no longer be treated as an add-on. Europe’s future is electric. That was one of the strongest takeaways from our conversations with Walburga Hemetsberger, Herbert Diess and Nikolaus Valerius. Despite their different perspectives, all three pointed to the same reality: decarbonization, competitiveness and security of supply. These are not separate goals. They are deeply interconnected. At SMA, we share the conviction that renewable energy and electrification are key to achieving all three. They reduce dependence on fossil fuels, strengthen Europe’s resilience, and lay the foundation for a competitive and sustainable energy future. The opportunity is there. On German Unity Day, we celebrate not only what unites Germany, but also the friendships and partnerships that connect us across borders. The relationship between Germany and Poland is of special significance due to our shared history. We are therefore pleased that our colleague, Kamil Nawrocki from SMA Solar Polska, represented our company at the reception to mark German Unity Day in Warsaw, where he engaged with leading figures from the worlds of politics, business and energy. The discussions focused on the opportunities and challenges of the energy transition, energy security, and the future of renewable energy supplies.
