One of the things we’ve learned through our work with NHS homecare teams is that digital transformation doesn’t always need to mean introducing something radically new. Often, the bigger opportunity is removing the friction that has built up around an existing process. Prescription renewals are a good example. There can still be a number of manual steps involved, from creating and signing a prescription through to clinical checking, scanning, emailing or posting it to the homecare provider. None is particularly complex on its own, but together they can create delays and make it difficult for teams to see where a prescription is in the process. That’s what we’ve addressed with e-prescribing through the Sciensus Connect Portal. We’ve developed it in partnership and around the way NHS teams already work, rather than asking hospitals to redesign their processes around our technology. Since launching in July, four hospitals have submitted 556 prescriptions through the pathway. 35% have reached Sciensus within one day. It’s early, and there is plenty still to learn. But for me, this is where digital technology can make a practical difference: making an important part of the homecare pathway simpler, more visible and easier to manage. We've been working on something new at Sciensus: extending our clinical homecare model to self-funded private care. Plenty of patients don't get NICE approval for a therapy their consultant believes is right for them, and self-funding becomes the only route. The problem I keep hearing from smaller and independent practices is that writing the prescription is the easy part. Sourcing the medicine, coordinating payment, arranging delivery and supporting the patient at home is where it gets hard, especially without an in-house pharmacy. We're piloting a service that takes that on: onboarding, payment coordination, medicine delivery and home-based clinical support through our specialist nurse network, while the consultant stays in charge of the treatment plan. Starting with the specialties where self-funding is most common: dermatology, respiratory, neurology, rheumatology and allergy. We're registering practices now. If this sounds like something your patients could use, I'd welcome a conversation, drop me a message.
