I’m excited to share that Sanford Medical Center Fargo was recently reverified by the American College of Surgeons as North Dakota’s only Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center! These verifications reflect our ability to provide 24/7 access to the most advanced care for critically injured patients across our region – from prevention through rehabilitation. This high level of expertise and readiness matters when seconds count, especially as demand for our services continues to grow. Since first earning our Level I designation in 2018, our trauma volumes have increased by 70%, with our team caring for 2,739 patients in 2024 alone. From EMS to emergency medicine, trauma surgery, anesthesiology, radiology, neurology and beyond, it takes an immense depth and breadth of talent to deliver this care. I am so proud of how our teams continue to come together to ensure our communities have access to timely, coordinated, expert trauma care close to home. To help celebrate, we produced a short video highlighting the transformative impact of our trauma services, which you can check out below: https://lnkd.in/g4GWF-9k

I’m excited to share that Sanford Fargo was recently recognized as one of the “60 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Programs” by Becker’s Healthcare! With the growing prevalence of behavioral health concerns across our region, especially in the rural areas we serve, it’s incredibly rewarding to see our efforts highlighted on a national stage. Our team was honored for our comprehensive, integrated and innovative approach to behavioral health care, which includes: - Virtual connections from our emergency departments to off-site psychiatrists, providing immediate, expert support for patients in crisis - Strategically placed integrated health therapists in primary care, allowing patients in need to receive behavioral health support during routine medical appointments - The recent launch of our Substance Use Disorder Clinic in Fargo, offering medication-assisted treatment, counseling, peer support and more to those navigating recovery These services, along with many others, are closing critical gaps in access and delivering timely, compassionate care to those who need it most. Beyond the services we provide within our facility walls, Becker’s also recognized the meaningful partnerships we’ve built across the region. Initiatives like BeHEARD for Educators, a behavioral health training program for local school staff in partnership with First International Bank & Trust, and the Behavioral Health Bridge, an online resource developed in partnership with the University of North Dakota, reflect our commitment to expanding access to education and reducing stigma. Through these efforts, we’re helping more people recognize when they–or someone close to them–may be struggling and feel empowered to seek support. I am so proud of the progress we’ve made and look forward to continuing to grow our behavioral health services across our clinics, hospitals and the communities we serve. Thank you to the Sanford Fargo behavioral health team for your dedication and hard work that makes this all possible! After being diagnosed with a brain tumor last year, Bobby Mukkamala, MD, President of the American Medical Association, went from provider to patient, sitting on the other side of the desk, on the table in the exam room instead of next to it and his perspective went from data points to personal lived experiences. Dr. Mukkamala joined Heather Spies, MD, MBA, FACOG, Physician Director of Clinician Experience and Well-Being at Sanford Health, at the 4th Annual Summit on the Future of Rural Health Care for "When the Doctor Becomes the Patient: Reflections on Purpose, Leadership and The Future of Health Care," a fireside chat where he shared how his personal journey deepened his understanding of the challenges patients face and strengthened his resolve to advance policies that improve access, equity and outcomes for all. As President and CEO of Dartmouth Health, the largest rural academic medical center in the United States, Joanne M.
