The difference between "generating" financial data and "amplifying" financial judgment. Many finance teams treat AI like a faster calculator or a slightly smarter OCR. They throw in raw data, expect processed transactions out, and move on. That is the "vending machine" approach to AI. It might save a few hours on manual entry, but it doesn't fundamentally improve the financial function. It just makes bad processes faster. The real opportunity for CFOs isn’t using AI to generate journal entries. It’s using AI to amplify human judgment. The difference isn't semantic. It's the entire game for the future of the office of the CFO. If you use AI to replace the human, you cap your potential at efficiency gains. If you use AI to handle the heavy lifting of reconciliation and pattern matching, while deliberately engineering points for human intervention on strategic decisions, you don't just get efficiency. You get leverage. The goal isn't a finance function untouched by human hands. The goal is a finance function where human hands only touch the things that matter.
