Sustainability directors are increasingly being asked one question they can't always answer… “What's your diversion rate?” Most people treat this as a data problem. I see it as a design problem. You can't produce a number you never set up to track. 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. 𝗜𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗻. 📋 Consistent signage. ♻️ Correctly sorted streams. 🚫 Less contamination. 📊 Cleaner numbers, less scrambling. If you can't answer the diversion question today, that's not a reporting gap. It's a system gap. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱: https://lnkd.in/giJiBUxG

Redwood Materials just launched dedicated battery collection bins in San Francisco. Here's why that matters more than it might look. Lithium batteries and vapes are becoming one of the most dangerous items in the regular waste stream. They're causing fires in trucks. In facilities. In places that never expected it. Most organizations still don't have a dedicated system for them. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮 𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. It's a safety issue waiting to happen at facilities that haven't planned for it. What happens if a company designs the most recyclable packaging in the world, but it still ends up in the wrong bin? 🤔 California just changed the conversation about who's responsible for packaging. Producers are now being asked to share responsibility for what happens after disposal. Most people see this as a legal story. Here's the part it misses >> The best packaging in the world still won't get recycled if it lands in the wrong bin. 🚮 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀. ⬆️ Upstream, that's on packaging design. ♻️ At the point of disposal, that's on the system. The law can mandate what packaging is made of. It can't mandate what happens at the bin. No AI system can fix a contaminated stream... Everyone in this industry is talking about AI right now. Smarter sensors. Robotic arms. Faster sorting lines. But here's what I see missing from most of the conversation 👇 Even the smartest sorting technology in the world still depends on something that happens long before the truck arrives...𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗻! Clear signage. Consistent bin design. Behavior that's easy to get right the first time. These are all the things that really matter. That's not a technology problem to solve. It's a design problem to get right. See how 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝘆's bins are designed to make the right decision the easy decision. https://lnkd.in/gWazmjjj

The organizations making the greatest progress aren't necessarily spending the most money... They're designing systems that make the right decision the easiest decision. Looking at two very different organizations in 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀, a municipality and a college system, is that they approached waste in exactly the same way. You should be able to just copy and paste the below text: Not as a disposal problem but as a leadership opportunity. The 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 and 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲 recognized something many organizations are still missing: 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. • Every employee sees it. • Every student interacts with it. • Every visitor notices it. When waste systems are thoughtfully designed, they do much more than improve diversion rates. • They create consistency. • They influence behavior. • They reduce contamination. • They support ESG reporting. They reinforce an organization's commitment to sustainability every single day. The biggest lesson wasn't about recycling T It was about leadership That's a lesson every campus, municipality, office, hospital, museum, and workplace can apply.
