CPHI Milan is coming up, and one of the conversations I’m most looking forward to is how we move AI from promise to practical impact in drug development and manufacturing. AI is already changing how we work, and the pace of progress is remarkable. For me, the important question now is where that progress is translating into meaningful results. In a regulated environment, applying AI effectively requires more than a promising model. It has to address a real problem, fit into established workflows, and give scientific and operational teams information they can confidently act on. At Thermo Fisher Scientific we’re putting AI to work against specific development and manufacturing challenges: helping teams make formulation decisions earlier, accelerating and improving the consistency of deviation investigations, and identifying manufacturing issues sooner. In automated visual inspection (AVI), we’ve seen the impact firsthand. Adding deep learning to an existing vision system reduced false rejection rates by 85%. That translates into less manual inspection, improved on-time delivery, and the potential to shorten the visual inspection cycle by two weeks. In an industry where two weeks saved can help protect an already compressed development timeline, improvements like these have practical impact beyond the individual process. This is ultimately how I think we should measure the value of AI—by the problems it helps us solve and the impact of the decisions it enables. I’ll be exploring this further in my CPHI session, “Putting AI to Work in Drug Development: Practical Applications That Deliver Measurable Value” (Wednesday, October 7, 13:45–14:10, Hall 10, 10K69). I’ll share how we’re applying AI across development, quality, and manufacturing, along with what we’re learning along the way. I am looking forward to seeing you all at CPHI Milan soon. If you’ll be at CPHI, I’d also welcome the opportunity to continue the conversation. Schedule time to meet with me and our team: http://spr.ly/6008B10xhg

“How do we move faster?” It’s a question I hear from customers nearly every day, and one I expect will be top of mind at CPHI Milan this year as investment in drug development has become more selective, development timelines remain stubbornly long, and new sources of innovation are raising the competitive bar globally. But the more I hear the question, the more I think we need to ask something else first: “Where can speed actually change the outcome?” Because getting to the next milestone faster isn’t automatically progress. The value of reaching a milestone sooner lies in what the time gained allows you to do next: make a critical decision earlier, address risk while there’s still time to act, or put capital and resources where they can have the greatest impact. In other words, the value of speed isn’t just the time saved. It’s what that time enables: better-informed decisions, earlier action on risk, and greater confidence in reaching the next milestone. This is a distinction I often make when customers ask how we can help them move faster. We start by considering the immediate challenge in the context of the customer’s broader program objectives, then tailor solutions to save time where it can have the greatest impact, rather than simply shortening individual activities in the timeline. No development milestone exists in isolation. What you do to gain time at one stage can create consequences at another. Moving one activity faster can help, but if that speed creates risk, rework, or constraints downstream, have you really gained time? We know that speed is critically important in drug development. That’s why we’re focused on helping customers gain time at key stages and carry that advantage forward. The point is to make sure the time saved at one stage helps the program move more effectively through the next. If you’ll be at CPHI Milan and want to explore where speed could have the greatest impact on your program, schedule a time to connect with our team onsite: http://spr.ly/6008B10xhg

I recently met with a biotech leadership team navigating a challenge that’s becoming increasingly common across the industry. The science was strong, the clinical data compelling, and the program was advancing quickly -- but many of the manufacturing and commercialization questions that could significantly impact the program later were still being evaluated in parallel. How would the process scale through clinical development? Would the manufacturing approach still support the needs of the program as it evolved? Did the process enable timelines to be accelerated? Would the existing strategy support long-term supply continuity and commercialization readiness? What the conversation reinforced for me is how important it has become to evaluate these CMC considerations earlier, particularly as biologics programs grow more complex and development timelines remain under pressure. These are the kinds of discussions shaping continued investment across our biologics development and manufacturing network at Thermo Fisher -- from infrastructure designed to help accelerate path-to-First In Human timelines to expanded sterile manufacturing and commercial-scale biologics capabilities to support programs as they move toward later-stage development and commercialization. I’ll be at #BIO2026 talking with biotech and biopharma leaders about the CMC challenges they’re navigating as programs evolve and how we can help support them for long-term development and commercialization success. If these are conversations your organization is having, let’s connect. Schedule a 1:1 meeting: https://lnkd.in/ebgZTktm
