Last-click tells you what you closed. It can't tell you how much influence your partners drove in AI search, or how much went to competitors instead.

AI answers are the new digital shelf—and your brand is either front row or invisible. Your Share of Shortlist™ is being shaped by algorithms right now; if you’re not measuring it, you’re guessing. See exactly where you stand in your category so you can show up where buyers actually decide.

In June 2025, I started speaking and writing publicly about how AI could reshape affiliate and performance marketing. The question I’ve kept coming back to since is increasingly fundamental: What happens when AI influences a commercial decision, but the click that historically made that influence visible disappears? I’ve spent much of the time since working through the implications of that question. Last week, I argued that the AI citation risks becoming this era’s Facebook Like: an important observable signal that is useful to measure, but dangerous to confuse with economic value. That was the first of five pieces I’m publishing with Partnerize to develop the argument I’ve been working on publicly since then: what performance marketing needs to become when commercial influence can no longer be assumed to produce a click. The second is out today. For this one, I went back to an earlier technology transition I had the opportunity to experience firsthand. More than two decades ago, I was at Ask Jeeves as search was becoming a mainstream interface for navigating the internet. Early SEO was dominated by what we could see: Where do we rank? For which searches? Who appears ahead of us? Those questions mattered. But search became economically consequential when the question changed: What happened because we were there? Rankings connected to traffic. Traffic to conversion. Conversion to revenue. Eventually, measurement became sophisticated enough to help businesses answer a much more important question: Where should the next dollar go? There was one critical piece of infrastructure connecting those worlds: The click. The click wasn’t the value. It was the observable bridge between discovery and what happened next. AI can remove that bridge without removing the commercial influence. That’s why I don’t believe the emerging AI measurement market ends with citations, visibility scores or even Share of Shortlist™. Those are important signals, and companies should be learning from them now. But mature measurement disciplines eventually have to connect what they observe to economic outcomes and capital allocation. That’s the argument I explore in installment two: I Watched Search Become a Measurement Discipline. AI Is Next. 👉 https://lnkd.in/g9TZA8Ci. This is the second of five pieces. In the three that follow, I’ll keep looking backward to understand what history can teach us about what needs to be built next. The parallels are becoming more interesting. So are the differences. We are still early enough that the rules of this market are being written. I believe our industry has an opportunity to help write them. #AIMarketing #PerformanceMarketing #AICommerce
