Every dairy company I work with can tell me its cost per ton. None of them can tell me the cost of planning things separately. There is no line item for it. Which is exactly why it survives. It surfaces somewhere else instead. A write-off on short-life yogurt. A stockout on the fast mover the retailer was promoting. Whey that expired because upstream processing was never aligned with downstream demand. A changeover that made sense to the scheduler and nowhere else. Each one gets logged as an operational slip and fixed locally. None of them can be traced back to the architecture that produced them: six planning domains, six objective functions, six locally optimal answers. That is not a discipline problem. It is a modeling problem. If the systems optimize separately, they will keep producing plans that are individually defensible and collectively expensive. Companies that connected milk sourcing, production, shelf life, and demand into one model, optimizing total contribution margin, report around 1% margin improvement and up to 20% less obsolete stock. One percent, against annual milk intake, is not a rounding error. For the full picture, read Anse Mertens analysis of what Land O'Lakes and FrieslandCampina report: https://lnkd.in/g7Nk42Qg

Did you know my grandparents had a (dairy) farm? My mom still tells me stories about how the cows got milked twice a day, every day. And then at the same hour, the milk would be collected, tanks would get cleaned and they would start all over again. My grandparents have long retired. For the dairy industry, that is still the job. Milk arrives in volumes and compositions nobody controls. The question is never how much to produce. It is which product stream deserves the milk you already have, and how fast you can answer that. Because, what happens if milk intake drops 8% next week? And how long does it take dairy companies to respond? The answer is usually days. It usually involves rebuilding a spreadsheet someone else owns. That gap is the real cost. Not the disruption, but the time between the disruption and a defensible decision. On low single-digit margins, it compounds quietly, as aged inventory, as a dumped load, as a promotion you could not supply. Land OLakes cut aged inventory by 25% and interfacility transfers by 21%. Not by planning harder. By making fewer, better decisions, earlier. I wrote up the full argument here - https://lnkd.in/eUcs6U6h PS - If you want to see toddler pictures of me in my overall on a miniature tractor, you can always ask me next time! 😉

🐄 In dairy, there's no pause button. For our customer Land O'Lakes, Inc., one supply chain miscalculation can wipe out margins overnight. Milk keeps flowing, ready or not. Tomaz Vrabec and Erica Westenbroek share how they transformed planning across three fundamentally different businesses, each with its own volatility profile, using OMP's AI-powered 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴™. What you'll take away: 📌 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁. Resilience comes from end-to-end visibility and smart orchestration, not firefighting. 📌 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗸. Leadership alignment, cross-functional collaboration, and phased execution drive lasting adoption. 📌 𝗙𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗻. 🥛 Milk arrives whether you planned for it or not. A tanker of it can become butter, cheese, or powder. Most of the margin is decided by which one you pick, and the window to pick closes fast. Tomaz Vrabec, Director of Digital Supply Chain at Land O'Lakes, Inc., and Erica Westenbroek, Vice President of Logistics and Planning, rebuilt planning across three fundamentally different businesses, each with its own volatility profile. They share how they did it, and what they'd do differently. 🎥 Catch their full story in the webinar recording: https://lnkd.in/eiZMenCg #SupplyChain #DigitalTransformation #Dairy
