What does it actually take to bring a new automotive microcontroller to life?🤔 Today, we're continuing Inside the Chip, our video series that follows the journey of the S32K5 microcontroller from concept to silicon. In Episode 3, we explore one of the most critical phases of chip development: defining its architecture. Every design choice involves trade-offs, but how do you balance power efficiency, real-time performance, flexibility and cost in a single device? In this episode, Paul Lee is joined by Martin Mienkina to discuss: 💡 What it takes to translate product requirements into a real chip architecture 💡 Why balancing power efficiency and deterministic real-time performance is such a challenge 💡 How the S32K5 architecture adapts to different vehicle operating modes Stay tuned for Episode 4, where we'll explore the AI capabilities of the S32K5 and what they make possible. Last year, a drone helped find me in the North Sea. The question I heard most afterwards was: "Great. But how did you get home?" 🤔 Fair question. A drone can locate a person in distress. Getting them safely back is a completely different challenge. What struck me was how many technologies and professionals must work together to make that happen. Aircraft, sensors, communications, navigation systems, edge computing, and highly trained crews all operating as one coordinated system. That is what makes aviation so fascinating. It is a showcase of systems innovation, where reliability, connectivity, functional safety, and intelligence are not nice-to-haves but absolute requirements. When you're hanging underneath a helicopter, you develop a real appreciation for technology that simply has to perform. From i.MX and Layerscape processors to S32 and MCX microcontrollers, as well as radar, connectivity, security, and power management technologies, NXP Semiconductors provides many of the building blocks for tomorrow's aerospace platforms. Seeing technology, processes, and highly trained professionals come together when every minute counts was truly impressive. A powerful reminder that technology is most meaningful when it solves real-world problems and helps keep people safe. My thanks to the DLRG and Northern Helicopter GmbH teams for letting me experience it firsthand.
