A general contractor, a delivery authority and an owner walk into a rail megaproject (we)b(in)ar... While it may sound like a joke, it's actually the setup for our next incredible event, featuring leaders from John Holland, VIDA Rail and The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), who will be talking about how they're using AI--right now--to assure, de-risk and deliver some of the world's biggest rail megaprojects. Join to hear Paul Reichl, Paul Bradley and Wesley Cadby CFIRM discuss how they: - Run AI-led risk assurance on an as-needed basis with minimal resource, keeping teams ahead of deliverability crises instead of reacting to them after the fact - Spot risks before they become issues, drawing on a model trained on >750,000 past project schedules - Strengthen possession assurance, giving teams the confidence to plan and protect critical track access windows without costly last-minute surprises - Roll AI-driven risk analysis out from a single team or project to an entire contracting organisation, building real buy-in from senior delivery teams along the way - Use conversational AI agents to interrogate schedules, run cost analysis, and generate reports and dashboards in minutes rather than days - Give oversight and delivery authority teams clearer, faster visibility into complex programmes spread across multiple contractors and alliances >> Tuesday the 14th of July at 8 AM BST / 5 PM AEST <<

We've got a cracking learning opportunity coming up, over a webinar: How owners, contractors and government bodies are using AI to de-risk, assure and deliver rail megaprojects. For the first time, we're going to bring speakers from the UK and Australia onto a webinar so we can hear the story from 3 critical stakeholder groups: 1) Government - Paul Reichl has a critical role in deploying technology to drive a step change in project delivery. Paul is at the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority. 2) Owner - Wesley Cadby oversees the critical risk function of a £10b rail megaproject, The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). 3) Contractor - Paul Bradley runs planning and scheduling for one of the top 3 largest contractors in Australia, John Holland.

We don’t have an energy shortage. We have a problem delivering energy projects. The world’s demand for energy continues to rise, even as the global energy system becomes more complex and uncertain. The IEA is clear: diversification, resilience, and speed of delivery have never mattered more. And the scale of what needs to be built is staggering. Across oil & gas, nuclear, and renewables, the global pipeline of energy megaprojects runs into the trillions of dollars over the coming decade. But here’s the uncomfortable reality: We’re not very good at delivering these projects on time. At nPlan, we’ve built an unrivalled dataset of over 750,000 past project schedules, which we’ve analysed to uncover consistent patterns: → 6 out of 7 large-scale projects are delivered late → The average schedule overrun is 43% When you zoom in on energy, it gets even more stark. From a sample of ~5 million oil & gas megaproject activities: → Activities take 62% longer than planned on average → The worst 10% take 229% longer than planned And it’s not isolated: → Nuclear project activities: +51% overrun → Renewable project activities: +60% overrun At the exact moment the world needs faster delivery of energy infrastructure, our current approach is structurally biased toward delay. For decades, project delivery has relied on human judgement, experience, and static plans. That approach simply can’t cope with the complexity and scale of today’s megaprojects. Energy project teams are starting to use AI trained on vast datasets of past projects to continuously assure their schedules — and, crucially, to proactively remove risk before delays materialise. On LNG Canada in Kitimat, for example: → AI identified 150 days of avoidable delay hidden within just 0.5% of activities → Insights enabled a resequencing of commissioning → Result: startup brought forward by ~2 months — optimisation worth millions in revenue This is what “no more project guessing” looks like. It’s also why we’re honoured to be named an Energy Innovation Pioneer at CERAWeek 2026. I’ll be sharing more from our dataset — and lessons from projects like LNG Canada — in my talk: “No more project guessing” at 5:00 PM, Wednesday 25 March I’ll also be joining the Pioneer panel earlier that morning at 8:30 AM. If you’re at CERAWeek, feel free to reach out — my DMs are open. And I’ll share the full LNG Canada case study in the comments for those interested.
