Unterschiedliche Perspektiven.

📷: SWR

Eight years ago, I had a conversation with Northwave that would change the course of my career. I was given the opportunity to build a business unit focused on something that, at the time, was still often seen as the "soft side" of cybersecurity: people. Human behavior. A secure and cybersafe culture. Crisis leadership. Communication under pressure. The mental impact of cyber incidents. Building organizations that are not only technically secure, but also capable of collaborating effectively, making sound decisions under pressure, and continuously strengthening their resilience maturity. What a journey it has been. Today, there is little debate left about the importance of the human factor alongside technology and organizational controls. In fact, many of the toughest challenges in cybersecurity emerge precisely where those three elements intersect. Yesterday's discussions at ONE reinforced that point once again. Building resilient organizations is not just about technology or controls. As our Human Resilience & Crisis Readiness team continues to grow, we are looking for new colleagues who want to help organizations become more resilient. We're currently hiring: Junior Human Resilience & Crisis Readiness Consultant & Senior Human Resilience & Crisis Readiness Consultant. Links in the comments. If you're passionate about the human side of cybersecurity, or know someone who is, I'd love to connect! Photo of Verena Z. during her key-note yesterday at ONE Conference, could not agree more!

We've become used to hearing about data breaches. But what happens when criminals start contacting victims directly? For years, ransomware was disruptive, yet relatively straightforward. Criminals put pressure on an organisation. Systems were encrypted, data was stolen, and somewhere around a boardroom table difficult decisions had to be made about how to respond. But the rules seem to be changing as we look back at for example the Flink incident. Increasingly, we see criminals putting pressure not only on the affected organisation, but also on the people behind the stolen data. Customers, patients, employees. People who have no influence over the situation, yet suddenly find themselves confronted with threats, publications, or direct messages from criminals. I find this a worrying development. Many people have become accustomed to news about data breaches: breach fatigue. Another breach. Another notification. Another password reset. But that fatigue disappears the moment it becomes personal. When a criminal contacts you directly. When the data involved is information that matters to you. When you no longer read about a breach in the news, but realise someone has access to information that affects your life. And that threshold is different for everyone. For some, its financial information. For others, medical records, information about a child, private communications, or home address details. This form of pressure extends far beyond the individual. It is a deliberate attempt to create fear, uncertainty, and societal pressure as part of a negotiation strategy. That raises important questions for organisations. How do you deal with criminals who keep escalating the pressure? When do you respond? When do you not? And how do you support the people affected while maintaining control of the situation? My advice: have these conversations in the cold phase, not in the middle of a crisis. That’s when you have the time and space to think through your strategy, your communications, and your response to the people caught in the middle. What to read more, see link in comments.
