Bain looked at what a buying group already knowing a vendor is worth once the process starts. Where familiarity sat with the recommender alone, 4% of deals were won. Where the whole buying group knew the brand at the outset, 81% were. Same product, same price, same pitch. The variable is who in the room had heard of you first. Recognition is not a soft metric in complex B2B. It is the largest single swing factor in the deal, and it is built long before anyone is ready to buy.

Bain & Company examined what separates won deals from lost ones in complex B2B. The strongest single factor was not price, product or process. It was whether the buying group already knew the brand when the process began. Where the whole group was familiar, 81% of deals were won. Where familiarity stopped at one recommender, almost none were. Your pitch is judged by people who formed a view of you long before you spoke. Deal orchestration is how you shape that view on purpose.

Key account lists only ever grow. A name is added after a good quarter, another after a reorg, another because someone senior asked. Nothing is ever taken off. So a list of forty gets covered like a list of eight, and the accounts that could carry your growth get the same attention as the ones that never will. Real coverage starts by deciding which accounts deserve it, then building presence across the whole buying group inside them. That is the difference between managing a list and orchestrating a deal.

Every single-threaded account is one email away from going quiet. Your contact changes role, the org restructures, a new leader arrives with their own preferences, and two years of relationship walks out with them. It rarely shows up as a lost deal. It shows up as an account that simply stops replying. Multi-threading is not more meetings. It is deliberate presence across levels and functions, so that no single departure can take the account with it.

A large account holds around 500 people. Roughly 100 of them are relevant to what you sell. Most teams can name two, and both usually sit in mid-management. That is not coverage. It is one relationship with a spare. When the decision widens, the people you never met are the ones judging whether you are a safe choice, and your champion has to carry a room that has never heard of you. Coverage means presence across levels and functions before the deal starts, not a scramble for introductions once it has.

Most key account management is maintenance. Quarterly reviews, renewals, responding to whatever the customer raises. It keeps the account alive, and it keeps the account exactly where it is. Growth inside an account comes from the opposite behaviour: bringing the customer something they did not ask for, to people who did not ask for a meeting. That is hard to sustain on relationship instinct alone. It takes a system that shows where the account is uncovered, and what to bring to whom.
