Morgan Stanley just put a number on what data center operators already know: the U.S. power grid is 57 gigawatts short of what AI infrastructure needs by 2028. Even after counting everything under construction and every alternative source, 33 gigawatts remain uncovered. The efficiency argument doesn't help. Cheaper tokens per watt just means more tokens. The Vera Rubin rack draws 234 kilowatts; the Rubin Ultra approaches 600. The power problem gets harder as the hardware gets better. What's actually happening: Enverus projects 29.6 GW of behind-the-meter gas generation added by 2030, with data centers driving 88 percent of it. Reuters says developers are already sourcing onsite gas turbines because they deploy faster than grid connections. The market is building around the grid because there is no other option. Next Century-Power has been building at that scale since day one: 1GW+ islanded microgrids, single-tenant, with a transition roadmap to on-site SMRs.
