I’ve never seen two departments agree more… that the other one is the problem. IT: “They won’t follow protocol.” OT: “They don’t understand operations.” IT: “They’re holding us back.” OT: “They’re pushing us off a cliff.” They’re both 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭. And they’re both 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠. It’s the corporate version of a cold war. No open conflict, yet zero alignment. And every digital initiative becomes collateral damage. The irony? Both teams say they want the same things: • Faster decision-making. • More uptime. • Safer, more efficient operations. It’s not a technology issue. It’s a trust issue. A language issue. A priorities issue. Digital transformation is the shared destination. But if IT and OT are rowing in opposite directions, don’t be surprised when you just spin in circles. 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞, 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐬? https://lnkd.in/em7AbwaC ******************************************* • Visit www.jeffwinterinsights.com for access to all my content and to stay current on Industry 4.0 and other cool tech trends • Ring the 🔔 for notifications!

Come with me if you want to transform. 😎 In Terminator 2, Skynet went rogue because machines didn’t trust humans. In Industry 4.0, companies go rogue because humans don’t trust their data, their systems, or each other. Yes, this quote is absolutely a spoof of the classic “I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle” line from Terminator 2. And no, Industry 4.0 doesn’t need leather jackets or a Harley-Davidson, but it does need something far more valuable: • 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚. • 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬. • 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Because in manufacturing, the real enemy isn’t a shape-shifting T-1000, it’s disconnected systems, siloed teams, legacy processes, and tribal knowledge hiding in someone’s notebook. You can’t achieve predictive anything… You can’t scale AI… You can’t automate intelligently… If your information is scattered across 12 spreadsheets and a prayer. Industry 4.0 demands 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. It demands 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It demands 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, not waging war across your plant floor. The future factory isn’t built with steel and circuits. It’s built with shared information, connected systems, and cross-functional cooperation. So yeah… consider this your friendly cyborg reminder: 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚, 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. 𝐇𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚 𝐥𝐚 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚, 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬. ******************************************* • Visit www.jeffwinterinsights.com for access to all my content and to stay current on Industry 4.0 and other cool tech trends • Ring the 🔔 for notifications!

ROI is one of the most powerful metrics in business… and also one of the most misused. When it’s applied to the right projects, it’s a hero. 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫. 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠. Perfect for initiatives with well-defined costs, stable processes, and predictable outcomes. But when ROI is forced onto transformation, modernization, or anything that fundamentally changes how people work? It stops being a flashlight and starts being a black hole. Not because the value isn’t real, but because ROI was never designed to capture things like cultural change, capability building, data readiness, or long-term resilience. Use ROI in the wrong place and you end up searching for something that may not exist in that form… and blaming the project instead of the metric. There are many kinds of value that won’t show up in a traditional ROI model: • Better decision speed • Reduced risk • Increased agility • Improved customer experience • The ability to do things you couldn’t do before That’s transformation value, not “ROI by end of Q1.” So if ROI actually matters? 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. Build a measurement plan before kickoff. Define the leading indicators. Assign the owners. Tie incentives to adoption. Review assumptions every month. And just as importantly… 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐎𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝 and where it shouldn’t. The companies that consistently win aren’t the ones that magically pick the best technology. They’re the ones who pick the right metrics for the right initiatives at the right time. ******************************************* • Visit www.jeffwinterinsights.com for access to all my content and to stay current on Industry 4.0 and other cool tech trends • Ring the 🔔 for notifications!
