'Made in Europe' shouldn’t mean every step is made in Europe. That may sound counterintuitive for a region building its clean industrial base. But supply chains differ from sector to sector and the rules need to reflect that. Steel is a case in point. With the right design and supply chain, a car made with clean steel could cost less than 1% more. But sensible decisions need to be made about which steps in the process Europe should protect and which can come from trusted partners in other regions. In the video below, Catherine McFarlane, Associate Director, Europe and Programme Insights at MPP, explains how a sector-by-sector approach keeps clean industry competitive and prices fair for consumers. The Industrial Accelerator Act amendment window closes soon. Our open letter sets out what needs to change in the current text. Read the open letter: https://lnkd.in/gBqrR-c5

In the last six months Europe took just 3 Final Investment Decisions in clean industry. All three had a mandate behind them. A mandate creates a guaranteed market. A guaranteed market means investors can move. This is exactly how SAF went from pipeline to delivery and it is the logic behind the Industrial Accelerator Act. The IAA is designed to do the same thing for steel, aluminium, and cement. Whether it succeeds depends entirely on whether the design is strong enough to actually move capital. In the video below, Catherine McFarlane, Associate Director, Europe and Programme Insights at MPP, explains what is at stake and why getting this right matters. MPP last week published an open letter setting out what needs to change in the current text – six asks for co-legislators, with the amendment window open until the end of this month. Last week, President von der Leyen said: "A fight for industrial capacities is shaping global competition." Mission Possible Partnership's Global Project Tracker confirms that this leadership race is on when it comes to the next horizon of clean industries: - Europe has more than 100 clean industrial projects in the most energy-intensive industries on the drawing board, together worth €85 billion of inward investment potential; but the pace at which these projects reach Final Investment Decisions is very slow. - China now holds more than 45% of the global clean industry pipeline past FID and concentrated nearly 2/3rds of new FIDs over the past two years. The President named some of the things that decide where investment lands: "A permit or a form, a grid connection or a financing decision." She is right. But in our experience working with project developers, the most critical criteria is whether anyone is ready to buy what is produced. That is the job of the Industrial Accelerator Act - and now is the time to get it right. Set the IAA requirements for clean aluminium, steel and cement below the capacity already financed, and it will fail to unlock new investments in European industry. Set them in line with the scale of Europe's pipeline, distinguish near-zero carbon projects at the technology frontier from lower-carbon projects, and investment in Europe's clean industry can flourish. The President stated, "where projects are in Europe's strategic interests, we need to massively accelerate." Our open letter, backed by leading businesses from across Europe's key industrial value chains, sets out six ways to do precisely that: https://lnkd.in/gBqrR-c5

In the last six months, China took 13 Final Investment Decisions in clean industry. Europe took three. All three were in sustainable aviation fuel. All three had a mandate behind them. That is not a coincidence. A mandate creates a guaranteed market. A guaranteed market means investors can move. Whether it succeeds depends entirely on whether the design is strong enough to actually move capital. Clean industry is rising. Countries and companies are waking up to what energy dependence really costs. The latest update to our Global Project Tracker shows how the shift to clean industry has sped up in 2026. 19 commercial-scale clean industrial projects reached final investment decision in the past six months – more than double the pace of a year earlier – worth an estimated $43 billion.
