Did you know that prior to the 1980s, simulations and R&D flowsheet calculations had to be done manually, with vast data being stored in paper-based databases? The introduction of HSC Chemistry®, a theory based software suite initially developed from the 1966 MSc work of Timo Talonen and further systematized and expanded by Antti Roine from 1980 onward, both part of the technology heritage that today forms Metso, transformed paper-based databases into a powerful digital toolkit, enabling faster and more precise calculations. Today, HSC helps mining teams model, test and optimize their processes — from recoveries and throughput to environmental impact — all before committing capital or changing a single live operating parameter.

Did you know the first flotation machines were much smaller than the high-capacity systems used today? It was in 1973 that Outokumpu unveiled its 16m³ OK Cell, which set a new benchmark as the world's first large-volume flotation cell, enabling fewer cells, reduced equipment and lower maintenance, transforming flotation plant design. From Outokumpu to Outotec, and today as Metso, this legacy continues to lead the industry by redefining performance and sustainable mineral recovery.

Did you know that the Symons cone crusher, first introduced in the 1920s, revolutionized secondary and tertiary crushing? At the time, crushing technology lacked the consistency and reliability needed for large-scale operations. The Symons crusher design changed that, bringing a standardized, durable solution that delivers consistent performance across a wide range of applications. More than a century later, Symons cone crushers remain true industry workhorses, with thousands still in operation around the world with a range of innovative upgrades available to keep these machines performing at their best.

Did you know that Metso began developing automatic anode casting already in 1969 in Harjavalta, Finland? At the time, anodes were still cast manually using controlled ladle tilting, a labor-intensive process with limited consistency. Metso’s innovations, starting with the first anode weighing and casting machine in 1972 and later the twin-wheel casting technology in the 1990s, transformed the process by increasing casting capacity and enabling a more efficient plant footprint. Today, most of the world’s copper anodes are produced using Metso technology, with over 100 anode casting systems delivered.
