Dr. Daniel Faden, MD, FACS, a Mass General Brigham head and neck surgical oncologist and principal investigator in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear's Mike Toth Head and Neck Cancer Research Center and his colleagues developed a new blood test, HPV-DeepSeek, to diagnose cancers caused by HPV much earlier. HPV-DeepSeek identifies pieces of the HPV genome and nine other factors in a blood sample. Other blood tests for HPV-related cancers only look for one or two pieces of the HPV genome, making it harder to find signs of cancer. But by looking at the whole genome, HPV-DeepSeek has more opportunity to detect cancer much earlier. Dr. Faden’s team used HPV-DeepSeek to test blood samples taken from people with and without throat cancer. They found the test offers 99% accuracy and very early detection. While HPV-DeepSeek is still being studied, Dr. Faden believes that this blood test for cancer detection will have many beneficial uses. An effective screening method that diagnoses HPV-related cancers early is critical for effective treatment. “This approach has significantly higher sensitivity than what's currently available, and therefore means earlier, more accurate detection than what we can do right now,” he says. “We hope in the future HPV-DeepSeek will become available for patients, and we can start to use it to improve their care.” Explore how innovations like HPV-DeepSeek are shaping the future of cancer screening and early diagnosis: https://lnkd.in/eMEZEnaS

"Robotic technology is pervasive throughout the treatment of all our disease states," says Steven L. Chang, MD, MS, chief of Urologic Oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. "That includes all urologic cancers as well as noncancerous cases. Utilizing robotics allows us to achieve our surgical goals effectively while reducing undue harm to patients." A key recent development at Mass General Brigham was the adoption of the da Vinci SP in 2024. Dr. Chang notes that urologists traditionally were experts in operating on the deep pelvis using extraperitoneal techniques. The advent of robotics and laparoscopy, however, shifted the focus to intraperitoneal approaches. This change improved outcomes in many ways but also increased the risk of injury to other organs in the intestinal cavity and created excessive scar tissue if multiple surgeries were required. The single-port system, Dr. Chang observes, enables urologists to return to their roots as extraperitoneal specialists. "And all of the attributes associated with minimally invasive surgery are heightened, accentuated by the fact that we're going in through a single port," he adds. In 2024, Brigham and Women’s Hospital conducted more than 160 urology procedures with the da Vinci SP — over 50% more than the second-ranked center in New England. Thanks to its burgeoning high-volume expertise, we are steadily shortening recovery times for prostate surgeries. Overall, Brigham urologists performed more than 800 robotic surgeries in 2024 — nearly 50% more than the next-highest-volume center in New England. In addition to surgery for localized prostate cancer, the Brigham is increasingly leveraging robotic technology for kidney, bladder, testicular, and penile cancers.
