We asked Dr. Kjersti Aagaard, maternal fetal medicine physician and national physician advisor at HCA Healthcare to break down one of the most common questions families face: why are babies born early. Prematurity affects 1 in 10 babies in the US, and the reasons behind early births are complex and often shaped by many factors. Together with HCA Healthcare, we’re working to ensure families get the care and support they need during one of the most critical times in their lives. After five long months in the NICU, Thelma finally got the moment she'd been dreaming of: bringing her baby boy home. 💜 Born preterm at just 22 weeks and weighing only 1lb 1oz, Aaron defied the odds with the help of his incredible care team at HCA Healthcare's Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas. To celebrate his homecoming after nearly five months in the hospital's Level III NICU, his care team threw him the sweetest NICU graduation party. Aaron's journey is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of families facing preterm birth - and of the importance of continued support and awareness. November is Prematurity Awareness Month®, which shines a global spotlight on the current state of maternal and infant health in the US and around the world. We all have a role to play in solving the prematurity crisis in the US. Why does prematurity awareness matter? We asked Dr. Kjersti Aagaard, maternal fetal medicine physician and a national physician advisor at HCA Healthcare. Each year in the US, 1 in 10 babies is born preterm. Prematurity impacts far too many moms and babies and is influenced by a variety of social and community factors. 1️⃣Preterm babies may have more health problems than babies born later. These include problems with their brain, lungs, heart, eyes, and other organs. 2️⃣Some preterm babies must spend time in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to get special medical care. 3️⃣Preterm birth can lead to lifelong health problems (e.g., cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, chronic lung disease, blindness, and hearing loss). Together, with HCA Healthcare, we help ensure families are supported during one of the most critical times in their lives.
