It took two days away from the office to know I had bet my career on the right people. When we started our company Linq, a few of us lived in an apartment with nothing. I had given up every comfort of the old job overnight, and I decided early that I would not complain about a single one of them. I assured myself this was the bet I had made, and I was going to carry the weight of it. The comfort I missed most was my desk. I stand all day and have not sat down at work in ten years. At Shipt, the company I left to start Linq, I had a standing desk, and it was the one thing that made the long days manageable. In the apartment, I had nothing like it. I never said a word, because next to everything else we were carrying, it felt like the last thing worth mentioning. What I did not know was that Jared was paying attention. He's my co-founder and one of my closest friends, and we had been building together long before Linq. But I had never told him, or anyone else, what I was missing. I assumed no one had noticed. One weekend I flew to Atlanta to see Tay, my now wife. I was gone for two days. While I was away, Jared set out to fix the one thing I had never said out loud. I came home and opened the door to a standing desk, built straight into the wall of our apartment. I had never asked for it. He had simply seen what I needed and made it while I was gone, and he never once made it a thing. That's when I realized it wasn't a one-time gesture. The good coffee I missed from Shipt had quietly become a pour-over station weeks earlier, before I ever thought to ask. I had been carrying these things alone, and the whole time, someone in that apartment had been taking them off my shoulders. That is the part I did not expect when I left a $500M company for an empty apartment. I thought the risk I was taking was about the work. What I found was a co-founder who paid attention to what I needed even when I refused to say it. You cannot find that on a resume, and there is no way to interview for it. Years later, none of that has changed. The company is bigger, and our lives look nothing like that apartment, but he still notices what I need before I do. That is the kind of co-founder worth having, and I don't tell him often enough. Thank you, Jared Mattsson.
