To understand the true scale of our planet's biodiversity, you have to be willing to dive into the freezing, uncharted unknown. Meet Kim Nesbitt an Undersea Specialist who brings the vibrant, hidden ecosystems of the world's most remote regions right to our guests. #WorldOceansDay #WorldOceanMonth What inspires you? "This is real exploration. We encounter extreme conditions like low visibility, strong currents, and water so cold it could freeze our equipment, all to film slugs and jellies! I love it. Keeping meticulous dive logs and establishing patterns in these remote environments is the most immersive way to keep my brain engaged." What is the most unexpected or unscripted moment you have ever witnessed? "We were doing a fjord dive in Southeast Alaska on a day with terrible visibility. As we descended below 50 feet, the water suddenly became crystal clear, but the murky layer above completely blocked out the sun. It was a "midday night dive!" Because of a phenomenon called "Deepwater Emergence," we found deep-sea corals, sponges, and nudibranchs. These are creatures that normally live thousands of meters deep, yet they were thriving in just 100 feet of pitch-black water." How does revealing the unseen world change the way guests view the ecosystem? "In polar regions, the landscape above water can be very monotone with mostly whites, blacks, dark blues, and greens. But under the water, it is an explosion of pinks, oranges, reds, and bright greens. Our planet’s true biodiversity lives in the ocean. I hope that by showing our guests the vibrant life beneath the surface, it inspires them to actively participate in marine conservation." What footage has elicited an unforgettable reaction from guests? "In a Patagonia fjord where we were likely the first people to ever SCUBA dive, we descended into dark, eerie water and found strange, 20-foot-tall columns growing out of the rocks. We filmed them and immediately brought the footage back to the ship. Through discussions with our colleagues, we identified them as Sea Rods, a type of tunicate that normally lives up to 700 meters deep." What is a common misconception about the ocean that your footage corrects? "People think that because cold water is unpleasant for humans, it must be unpleasant for marine life. The opposite is true! Cold water actually holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water. Combined with the nutrients coming off glaciers, these cold environments allow massive amounts of life, like cold-water corals, to completely flourish." How does your footage contribute to broader marine conservation? "Because we conduct true expedition diving, we often visit places no one has ever been underwater before. We’ve documented new species, observed range extensions, and contributed vital biodiversity data by donating over 11,000 images to the citizen science platform iNaturalist through our “Underwater Life of LEX” project."

In collaboration with National Geographic Society, we're proud to announce the 2026 Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship, which is bringing together an outstanding cohort of 36 educators from across North America who embody the program’s spirit of shaping the planetary stewards of tomorrow through learning, creating, connecting and exploring. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship (GTF) is a professional learning opportunity for pre-K–12 educators made possible through a collaboration between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. Through a comprehensive application process, educators are selected for a life-changing, field-based experience that they can use in transformative ways to teach students, engage colleagues, and bring new geographic awareness into their learning environments and communities. https://lnkd.in/eQVhuKuQ This year marks 20 years since the fellowship’s founding. Since 2006, 470 educators have been selected for this impactful program, and we can't wait to welcome the 2026 cohort aboard! #GrosvenorTeacherFellow
