The future of agentic AI doesn’t require organizations to get more technical. It requires technology to finally meet organizations where they are. Last week I talked about the "prediction > proof" problem — how most AI initiatives fail because they're built on guesses rather than grounded in actual employee workflows (link in comments). But here's the thing: even when you do have proof of what needs to be automated, you immediately slam into two massive barriers that stop most organizations cold. The Technical Translation Problem Let's say your support team has a repetitive workflow that's eating 10 hours a week per person. You've identified it. You know it's real. You have proof it matters. Now what? Someone has to translate that real-world problem into technical requirements. What data sources does the agent need? What's the decision tree? What are the edge cases? How do you handle exceptions? This isn't a job for your support team. They're experts at their work, not at writing technical specs for AI systems. So you need technical staff to do the translation. And, the few you have are already underwater with critical infrastructure, security updates, and the backlog from last quarter. The Integration Complexity Problem But let's say you clear that hurdle. Now you need someone who can actually build it. And this is where things get exponentially harder. Because your AI agent doesn't exist in a vacuum. It needs to pull data from your CRM, check your knowledge base, update your ticketing system, send notifications through Slack, and log everything for compliance. That requires deep knowledge of APIs, authentication protocols, data mapping, error handling, and system architecture. It's not "connect tool A to tool B." It's orchestrating a dozen systems that were never designed to work together. The reality? The overwhelming majority of people that we speak to using AI today — including many technical folks — don't have this skillset. And why would they? It's not their job. They want AI to make their work easier; they don’t want to become systems integrators. So we’ve created a bizarre expectation: Employees are supposed to articulate problems as if they’re solution architects, and technical teams are supposed to architect solutions as if they have infinite bandwidth and perfect visibility into day‑to‑day work of the employees they’re building solutions for. This is why so many AI initiatives stall out after the excitement phase. Not because the ideas are bad… but because the translation layer is broken. And yet — this translation layer is exactly what must work if we expect agentic AI to produce real, repeatable, bottom‑line value. We’ve had a “eureka” moment at Liminal and found a radically different approach: self-assembling, self-improving agentic workflows based on observable behavioral insights and organizational memory. We’ll be sharing how it works — and what it changes — in the coming weeks. #ai #agenticai #automation
