Indirect tax transformation is no longer about keeping up with compliance. It is about creating a more efficient, controlled and data-driven business. Today, transformation agendas are being driven by multiple forces: 🔹 AI-driven developments are enabling more intelligent data analysis, automated controls, exception management and compliance activities, with the potential to reduce manual effort and improve risk detection. 🔹 ERP transformations and platform upgrades create opportunities to standardize processes, improve data quality and embed tax controls into the flow of transactions. 🔹 eInvoicing and digital reporting mandates are accelerating the move towards real-time, structured tax data, turning compliance requirements into an opportunity to strengthen data and process governance. 🔹 Procurement transformation, including platforms and middleware such as Coupa and SAP Ariba, is reshaping where tax-relevant decisions are made and where tax controls need to be embedded. 🔹 Operating model changes are redefining governance, accountability and ownership, with centralization and automation creating opportunities to scale compliance more efficiently. 🔹 Tax determination solutions, whether ERP-native or external, can help deliver greater consistency, accuracy and automation across jurisdictions and transaction types. The key question is therefore no longer simply "How do we comply with VAT/GST requirements?" but "How do we design indirect tax into the business, technology and AI landscape by design, rather than as an afterthought?" Successful indirect tax transformation connects Tax, Finance, Procurement, IT and the business around a common process, data and governance architecture. Is your indirect tax function built for where the business is heading - or still catching up? Get in touch, I'd be happy to discuss what this could look like for your organization! ⚠️ One observation from this year's Swiss VAT reconciliation season: the biggest VAT risks are often not in the numbers, but in the documentation behind them. While reviewing VAT recovery positions, I found myself revisiting a recent Federal Supreme Court decision concerning participation holdings, in which my colleagues from our tax #litigation team at KPMG Switzerland, Mathias Bopp and Dr. Anna Junghardt, successfully argued an important point of principle. ⚖️ The Court confirmed that shareholdings below 10 percent may qualify as participations for VAT purposes where a significant influence can be demonstrated. At the same time, the case highlighted how critical it is to be able to substantiate that position years later during an audit or dispute. Many VAT reconciliations focus on turnover, VAT coding and input VAT adjustments. Equally important is asking whether the supporting documentation still tells a coherent story around participation income, financing activities and the broader VAT recovery model. 🧩 One of my key takeaways from this year's reconciliation season: Today’s documentation is tomorrow’s defence file. 🛡️ #vat #kpmg

🕛 France is not delaying e-invoicing. 1 September 2026 holds, with softer penalty enforcement for businesses. France will start its mandatory e-invoicing journey on 1 September 2026. Large and midsize companies will need to issue electronic invoices, while all businesses must be able to receive them. From 1 September 2027, the obligation extends to SMEs and microenterprises. Many organizations see France as a one-off, country-specific compliance project. However, it is part of a much bigger transformation. ▶️ The EU’s VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) package is also accelerating the move toward digital VAT compliance. 1 July 2030 is the most significant milestone. Mandatory structured e-invoicing becomes the default for intra-EU B2B transactions, and invoice data must be reported electronically in near real time, replacing EC Sales Lists (VIES recapitulative statements). ❗ At the same time, Germany (1 January 2027), Spain (1 October 2027), Luxembourg (1 January 2028), the UK (April 2029) and other countries are introducing their own e-invoicing and/or real-time reporting mandates with different timelines and implementation models. The challenge is no longer preparing for one deadline. It is building a scalable approach that can adapt to a growing number of digital tax requirements across Europe. The organizations that start with data, processes and technology foundations today will be better prepared for the next wave of mandates. #kpmg #vat #digital #einvoicing #transformation
