Owners waiting for regulatory certainty may find themselves waiting longer than expected. That's why we focus on lower energy demand, fuel flexibility and verified data, helping owners prepare for a range of possible outcomes. Explore how you can prepare your fleet to switch ON for zero emissions below.

"It can also be used to increase the range that you'll get from a single battery charge, or reduce the amount of time you're going to spend recharging after a given run. So it fits very nicely with all other fuel sources coming into your port." Tom James, Sales Director at BAR Technologies, on how wind works alongside other energy sources on board. Decarbonisation will not be delivered by a single technology. Success depends on different solutions working together. Wind-assisted propulsion is one example. By supporting electric propulsion, it can help extend battery range and reduce charging demand in port. Technologies like these can be integrated and managed through our K-SAIL system, helping operators optimise performance across different propulsion and energy sources. "We should reach net zero by 2050, but the path there remains uncertain. The industry needs clarity to make the right investments. But we have to live in this, and there are strategies to adapt and be successful in this market as well." Oskar Levander, our VP Strategy & Business Development, on the IMO Net-Zero Framework. Rather than waiting for complete regulatory certainty, owners can prepare for a range of possible outcomes. Designing vessels with lower energy demand, fuel flexibility and access to verified performance data is one way to build resilience into long-term fleet decisions. "... we're not the only port facing a severe lack of the electricity that's needed for the future. We've got about 7 megawatts. We need about 160 megawatts to be able to feed the electric ferries that we know are coming. That's a huge, huge increase." Megan Turner, Environment and Sustainability Manager at the Port of Dover. Designing for electrification is no longer the hard part. Building the infrastructure and coordination needed to support it is. Designing for electrification is no longer the hard part. My team at Kongsberg Maritime modelled two fully electric RoPax designs against diesel equivalents across European ferry routes operating from 2030 to 2040. Both came out 8-15% lower on whole-life cost. What looked futuristic five years ago is commercially viable today on the right routes. The harder problems are outside the world of vessel design. High-power charging isn't available everywhere, and ports, grid operators and owners have to move together. The deeper question is how to specify a ship now for three decades of regulations to come. In my article I make the case for designing once to comply everywhere - including for the many vessels where electrification isn't an option at all. https://lnkd.in/dWunasEB #Decarbonisation #ShipsandShipping #Maritime #ETS #FuelEUMaritime
