Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Theatre Factory 42 in Tbilisi, an independent theater created in a former factory, and go behind the scenes with its founder Levan Tsuladze. During our conversation, I asked him whether truly good acting is something you can learn, or something you are simply born with. There’s an interesting parallel with the conversations I often have with people about their careers: How much of what makes us good at something is natural ability, and how much can we learn? The answer from the theatre was perhaps not so different from the workplace. Talent matters, but so do training, preparation and practice. Even great actors work at their craft and learn to manage the nerves before stepping onto the stage. The same is true of the skills we build throughout our careers. Some things will always come more naturally than others, but we can learn, practice and get better at far more than we sometimes imagine. It left me thinking about the things I may have decided too quickly were simply ‘not for me’... Perhaps we shouldn't be too quick to decide what we are, or aren't, good at. And while I'm still not convinced there is an actress hiding in me, the 17th-century look was rather fun! 🙂
