The difference between acquiring 5,000 new donors a year and 90,000 new donors is not: - A new brand campaign (Read: Great Fundraising and Brands: Help or Hindrance?) - A rebrand (Read: Mark Phillips, The Bleedin’ Obvious Guide to Why Income Usually Falls After a Rebrand) - Building a ‘better’ funnel (donor intent doesn’t start in a funnel; it starts in real life) - ‘Warming people up’ first (this makes each conversion more expensive once you count the cost of warming people up) No. It’s ‘simply’ having more different propositions, and each one… - meets a need of a specific audience (that is still big enough) - is smooth from start to finish with as little friction as possible from the ad to the thank-you flow - has an optimised business case (not based on CPA but on the value created over the years), where you make money from every touchpoint That is what makes the difference. You can only do this when you build propositions that you can keep improving instead of running from campaign to campaign. ---- 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘕𝘎𝘖𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘵𝘰-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨. ‘Shouldn’t we just acquire one-off donors?’ I hear this at almost every charity I speak to. My answer: only if you turn them into regular givers. The data is the same in every market: fewer than 1 in 5 first-time donors (around 18 to 20%) ever give a second time. And the answer is not to treat them better with ‘a real thank-you’, ‘show them what they are part of’, ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘give them an update’ emails, like I see at every fundraising conference. The average open rate of these emails is 25 to 30% (!). You simply don’t reach them, and that’s getting worse. There is another reason too. To make online one-off donation campaigns profitable, charities often focus on what is most urgent (e.g. emergency aid) and gives the lowest cost per gift. Not on the themes that bring in donors who really care about their mission and keep giving. What you should do instead : ask people for a regular gift straight away. Ask them to become a regular giver when they make their first donation*. Benchmark: 9 to 13% will choose regular giving. And we all know a regular giver is worth many times more than a donor who gives twice. You can still follow up with the other donors (or at least some of them) through a journey and telephone fundraising. But they will be a nice bonus in a proper acquisition business case. *By the way, on most (good) donation forms, this is a standard option. ---- 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘕𝘎𝘖𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘵𝘰-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨. Many charities are now making plans for 2027 or are still working on their end-of-year campaigns. Next week I'm running another (free) online Ask Me Anything session. You can ask me anything about your online fundraising. You can bring any question you have, for example about: - Your forecast for 2027 - Benchmark data - How to improve your end-of-year campaign - Inhouse vs Hybrid vs Outsourcing - What to do about (domain) restrictions on Meta Why am I doing this? - Because I like sharing what I know - Because there's so much room for improvement - Because it helps me understand what's happening in the market Date: Thursday 14 October, 10:30 to 11:30 Sign up using the link below! You'll get an invite as soon as possible. And it would be great if you could like or share this post. More people seeing it means more good questions, and you'll probably learn something from them too. 🙏

Did your NGO receive this email? Keep reading. Your fundraising campaigns on Meta are probably at risk... In recent weeks, several NGOs have come to us with the same problem. Meta categorised their website as "political" (or other categories) and then restricted it. This means you cannot measure conversions. And without conversion data, you won't be able to run an effective fundraising campaign. Want to know how to advertise on Meta without getting restricted? Download our step-by-step guide (link 👇). ---- 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘕𝘎𝘖𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘵𝘰-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨. Is your NGO still struggling with Meta’s TTPA restrictions? It has been 6 months since the new restrictions started. We now have a very clear view of what works and what doesn't. So we created a practical Playbook to help you: - Use the right words to avoid being blocked. - Keep your best campaigns running. - Reach your audience without triggering the "political" filter. Stop guessing why your ads are rejected and start reaching your donors again. Want to receive the Playbook? Leave your details here : https://lnkd.in/emnKxigM
